Mounting external steering ram
Can the ram be mounted on an angle or does it need to be perfectly level? I swapped my trs for a bravo and the drive mounting bracket is lower than the trs was. The drive bracket is about 2" lower than the hull mount.

Re: Mounting external steering ram
If it’s off by much you will see you the boat start to turn when you trim it up or down. Specifically if it’s a single ram system. So it's not recommended, but in the end you have to do what you have to do.

Re: Mounting external steering ram
the rams should be straight and parallel when the drive is trimmed to the neutral position. if it is off the system will balance it self out , how ever you will lose turning ability as far as lock to lock. also not good for the transom from a stress point of view.

Re: Mounting external steering ram
You didn't specify if this is a single or dual ram. If it's a single ram the above points are true. If it's a dual ram, the ram absolutly must be centered. You will end up with a nasty bind condition and something will break. If it's a single ram that is mounted off center, the system can never be upgraded to a dual ram for the same reason.

Re: Mounting external steering ram
It's a single ram. Problem is I can't lower the transom mount any more, the trim tab is there. The steering bracket is an imco. Does anyone know if there is a bracket that mounts on top of the drive instead of the back?

Carm,
A Marine Machine Style Wing Plate mounts to the top of the drive. |
Re: Mounting external steering ram
If you can't find one that will work, and descent welding/fab shop should be able to make you one using the one you have as template for the bolt pattern, just tell em you want the steering cylinder mount to be 2" higher. If you do have a custom one made though you may as well get it right on the money and measure it exactly.

I've got a pair of TRS steering mounts--I know you said Bravo but maybe it would be easier to mosify these than fab new ones. THese are built like brick outhouse of polished stainless.
