1996 7.4 LX EFI motors - background and details?

We are in the process of buying a boat with a pair of 1996 Merc 7.4 LX EFI motors. Can anyone give me the skinny on these engines? 2 or 4 bolt mains? What are the differences between these and the 454 Mags of the same vintage? Best way to get a bit more hp out of them? That sort of thing...

4 bolt mains, cast crack, small rods, flat top pistons, oval port heads...
A good flowing exhaust system is always a great place to start...
