Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Without knowing for sure, I'd hate to cast any opinions about the silent choice. If I were to guess though, I would imagine you should see the benefit with or without silent choice. However, with the silent choice engaged, I believe that would cause a little more back pressure, so you would need to check into whether or not if that might create a problem...

Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Anybody have a pic of that plate?
Is the Raylar kit not able to be used with silent-choice? |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I think that I may have introduced some confusion with my post about Merc not recommending use of the Resonators with Silent Choice.
This has nothing to do with the use of Silent Choice with (or without) Turbulators. Sorry for the confusion. Dave |

Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
dave n,
do you run in salt water?mine did'nt look that rusted, just wondering about the difference. |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
so I've got mine out as I removed the risers to facilitate an exhaust tip change. I removed the silent thunder box and am installing the larger Corsa transom mount muffs that Troutly hooked me up with. With the diffuser cones removed from the end...the sound should be just right. You don't get hassled here unless your pretty obnoxious in terms of exhaust note, but I don't want totally open and niether do all my cruiser nieghbors in the boathouse. ;)
I call an hour south to the only place to take the risers for strip and polish (do alot of marine and custom car work)... SIX week backlog with all his guys working 10 hour days! :( Dammit!! polished risers and painted covers would dress the engine room up a bit. Guess it'll have to wait. leaving the turbolators out BTW. |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I painted my cowls red and it really adds a lot. Polished risers would look awesome to top it off.

The story on that turbulator is that it is from a salt water boat stored in the water. A 39' performance cruiser that had a PWC lift and 800 pound PWC on the back, submergeing the exhaust tips and bringing the riser height to just 11" above the waterline. It was ingesting a lot of salt water. Check out the manifold below.

Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Ouch, that hurts...
So has anyone done their personal testing on these yet in terms of before/after numbers? BTW, what kind of shop should I look up in the local yellow pages to get my risers polished while I have them off? |

Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
anyone try whipples stage 2 kits on 496 HO?
any gains? |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I pulled mine off. I'll post the results next week.
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I'm starting to think about removing mine. My motor is brand new. I want to get a baseline results before removing them.
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
BigMac,
Nobody ever seems to answer about the Stage2. There was another thread a couple weeks back and we were hoping Dustin from Whipple would jump in |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Gonna be taking mine off soon. Haven't broke the boat out yet to get to it...
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
don't have any numbers yet ,maybe next weekend,it is a little louder :D:
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Well that's one point to the positive..... :D
We've got several 496HO's around here and everyone is slobbering to get theirs off in the hopes of getting that extra whatever out of it... |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Take a look at threadhttp://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96113&goto=newpost 496 MAG HO

Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
reckless,
are coming up for the SML run next weekend? |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
There's a long shot I might pop in since my boat is still there. I'm traveling to Atlanta tomorrow thru late afternoon Friday on business, plus may have to do a day tour with the wife on Saturday (her idea, not mine) but that looks like it's turning into an all girls trip sans the guys so anything is possible. So Mark might see me pop in early Saturday morning to raftup....err...snag the boat to take it home, if he doesn't bring it to me earlier this week. :eureka:
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
if you make it in we will be rafting up so look for us,we will come by bridgewater before the run then we are heading out, we always have more fun than the runners. :drink:

Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Looking For Local Polishers ? Call Your Local Music Shops They Will Hook You Up With Polishing Shops That Do Instruments... Mine Quoted Me $ 30 Ea. And I Told Them They Had To Strip The Stubborn Coating.

Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
BIGMAC Yeah... Save Your $1200.

Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I got about a 100 rpm increase. But that is with Rex Marine replacement tip mufflers that cut my RPM's by about 150-200 on a stock 496HO. Maybe picked up 1-2mph.
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Anyone else have some info after running this weekend, just trying to figure if its actual worth pulling them out.
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
mwdill I did make it over there, but not until around 5pm. Stopped into Camper's Paradise and chatted awhile with Brayn Tuvell who was done and showered by then. Hung out for about an hour then hit the road back to the beach in order to spend a full day on the Bay with the gang. We ran over to Cape Charles on the eastern shore for the day. After picking up the boat from Shoreline i saw several boats as i crossed the bridge heading north. Man was it tempting to just stay.... :drink:
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
What other kind of common shops would do the stripping and polishing of the risers and under what topic would I look in the yellow pages?
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Come on now anyone else got any results from doing this?
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
not yet,i should know something this weekend :D:
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I've not yet had the proper conditions to get good top-end numbers. I have noticed two things: the engine has a louder, deeper rumble (good) and mid-range acceleration, especially around 4,000 rpm, is noticeably improved (very good). I'll post more when I can get some good WOT numbers. The extra mid-range punch alone is worth the effort.
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Still interested in any op-check results on the removal of the turbulators....
Most of what has been said (and that's very little) sounds like it definitely makes the HO a little louder; and possibly 100 rpm more....? Any other debriefs...? |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I posted on another thread about this but I'll say it here too. I took mine out and was not impressed. I think I lost a little torque and my hole-shot suffered. Mine are going back in.
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Well now that's interesting. I wonder what it is about opening the exhaust orifice another inch in diameter that would cause a diminish in performance? Because isn't it essentially the same as putting a set of headers on to help the engine breath better?
Anyone else...? |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
but moving the peak torque RPM up I bet without them...
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I am not impressed with mine removed either... debating whether or not to put them back in..
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
I removed mine about a month ago and saw a little increase in top speed. My fastest top speed went from 74.5 to 76.3 m.p.h. recorded on GPS. I haven't noticed it being any louder.
|
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
You would think though that providing the exhaust path an extra inch diameter (3" to 4") to improve exhaust gas flow would make a positive difference...?
I'm kinda waiting until i find a polishing place to take the paint off and polish the risers while I have them off. I only wanna take'em off once.... |
Re: Removal of 496HO restriction plates
Anyone got any updated info ???
