HOW do you zero trim tabs ???

1 Attachment(s)
I have heard 2 ways .

One.. With a straight edge on the bottom of the boat make the tab level with the bottom of the boat.[Same angle]

Two.. Use the straight edge and adjust the tab where the tip of the tab touches the straight edge [seems like this would make it pointed down rather than flat with the bottom]

Also the water will be rolling off the back edge going up.I would think at zero that it would be touching the water pretty good unless that area is out of the water Like when your running close to 100mph.I know the speedo tube is out of the water at that speed ..

Thanks for you imput

I've always heard the first rule Rob. that way in effect its an extension of the hull. Lower your speedo tube, lol. did you get the steering fixed?

I have always gone by having them parallel to the bottom of the boat. You can just use a long strait edge. Pick a number to adjust them up both the same on the indicator gage and then mark the indicator gage. I marked them by taking 2 pieces of masking tape acoss the indicator leaving a thin opening over the number for neutral position and then painting the line across. Remove the tape and it looks like it was done at the factory!
I found that having a mark on the indicators for reference when we are racing is so much easier than trying read the numbers!

Re: HOW do you zero trim tabs ???

Yea the steering is fixed and is better than it has ever been :D

I guess I need a GPS in the dash .I don't think I can lower the tube enough.Yea Bill it is getting pretty far out of the water. My Buddy's rather hold on than hold the handheld GPS

I adjusted the tab like #1 with them flush with the bottom of the boat with in of a 1/16. With it the same as the bottom of the boat I zeroed the gage . Hustler told me to do it the 2nd way.I guess its just a reference point anyway as long as they are exactly the same .

Anybody else have any suggestions????

Thanks

Rob

What about props? if you have too much stern lift, you may be pushing out too far with the new horsepower. from what Julie told me, round tips give stern lift, cleavers give bow lift...Rob

Rob-Good talking to you yesterday. About lowering the speedometer Pitot tube, my Slingshot has the standard 7" pitot tube that I have to replace every season (get bent) from Livorsi (p/n GCT1, $17). Catalog shows a 5" and a 10" tube. CT1L is p/n for longer tube. Don't know about latest prices because I order 2-3 at a time. Even with the Northstar, I like to see the speedometer. Lou

Rob- You're just looking for another excuse to turn yourself into Gumby under the dash! I thought you would have learned your lesson after changing the K-Plane cables and messing with the power steering/helm! Just kidding. Lou

Rob- I polished up the two shafts here at home. Will go back Monday and finish up the 380's, change plugs, pump up the tires and she should be good to go. I'll take some pics of the low water pickups and the spacing between the tabs, the cleavers and Speedmaster skegs. Sounds like you're boat is flying (and steering) now! Lou

I've heard a lot of tab-zeroing methods and they all have some merit. The one I like is where I'm cruising into some two footers at about 60-65 mph (that's about a million knots for you nautical types) and I close my eyes and fiddle (that's the actually technical term for it I learned in the Navy) with the tabs until I attain the perfect balance between drag and lift and the boat glides across the crests two at a time. It takes some practice.

You want me to close my eyes and play with tabs at 95 plus mph when its chime walking from one rub rail to the other  Would you like to go for a ride with me while I try this :drink: Can we do it at night too.

All my buddys already close there eyes when I drive anyway ,someone has to watch where were going :D :D

NOW I know how those boats got split in two hitting trees, bridges, jetties! Officer, I was just cruising along, adjusting my tabs! No offense RJ, you seem like a good sport!
