Thank everyone for the advice. I have the Ford service manuals but can't find them

Re: Truck question

Mopower,

I had a similar problem with a '99 AWD Expedition. I don't know if it was the same transmission as your F-350, but the position sensor went out. The 2wd/4wd/high/low shifting mechanism therefore did not know where it was "supposed" to be and therefore wandered around in and out of different settings burning up the transfer case. Of course, it was out of warranty and cost me $2000.00.

The dealer told me these 4WD's need to be ran through all diffferent settings manually once per month, and it they don't engage properly and light up the appropriate indicator on the dash, the position sensor needs to be replaced before it burns up the transfer case.

Red ,
I had a similar prob. with a Chevy S10 Blazer years back. That was a vacuum ported switch on the t-case that controlled the front axle lock up. That was a very common prob. with them and a 10 minute $20 fix. I'm sure this is something in the control ckt. and not the case itself. It's just isolating the prob. that's difficult

BTW my 4x4 was not used since last boating season
