Engine Break In

I just installed my rebuilt 502MPI and fired it up...
The boat is nearly ready to get wet.
My question is how long I should run before I hammer the throttle.
The rebuild was basic, new rings, bearings, and oil pump for the bottom. And new lifters, valve springs, rockers, and a valve job up top...
I'm thinking of running it for 3-4 hours with only short bursts above 4000rpm.
Then change the oil and let her rip! :D
Does this sound reasonable?

Re: Engine Break In

I am starting to break in two new engines this weekend on the water. Have already broke in the flat tappet cams on my poor mans dyno. I intend to run 5 hrs varying rpm around cruise speed but not going much above 3500rpm. Maybe just once in WOT range quick to make sure I am making the right power. Change oil, then continue same but with short bursts into the upper rpm range. At 10hrs if all is well I will change oil to synthetic and run as broken in.

BT
