Which Oil Pump ~ Hi Volume or STD.?

I am in the process of rebuilding two 454 magnums. These will have hp-500 roller cams and roller rockers. Should one go for the High volume oil pump or remain with the std. volume pump type? The remainder of the build is pretty generic, I.E. Forged crank, forged .030 pistons, rectangular port head. I plan on running in the 5000 - 5200 rpm range.
Boat is a Formula F-311. Hydromotive props ( 24 pitch ) Bravo drives. Thanks for your thoughts.

Theres a long thread on this somewhere. I think the final word was with a remote filter and cooler, the high volume pump is prefered. Otherwise, its wasted hp. The real deal is proper bearing clearances. I use the high volume too after asking the same question.

I have used both with good results. I agree proper bearing clearance is the key. On my current solid roller motor I run a high volume and a 10 qt pan.

High volume is the best with larger oil capacity.

Melling makes a great high/ high pressure, screw on pickup, less than $100. High RPM any lenght of time you know there will be a film between the crank and bearings!! I found the Melling combo based on Sutphen 30's advice. He has certainly proved his knowledge over the years!!

TomR is right on the Melling 10777 amd 10778 series oil pumps are the ticket. They are high volume, anti-cavitation gear shaft double support oil pumps with a hex shaft adapter drive that basically fix all the potetial problems with BBC oil pumps for about a $100 bill. Bearing clearances are really important in high -po marine motors. Make sure they are dialed in! and don't forget to prime the oil system. I have seen a few pumps ruined in just a couple minutes of dry start running.
