575SCi oil leak? FOUND!!!!
 

It was coming from my raw water pump!


My raw water pump is the type that also has a fuel pump attached. There is a small oil galley to lube the mechanical fuel pump. That gally was full full of oily fuel. I assume my fuel pump is leaking and presurizing the oil gally on the raw water pump. Also diluting the oil with fuel. I guess it has been going on for some time now. The I guess the fuel/oil mix worked out thru the seals and onto the motor. Both pumps have this problem!

2 new complete assemblies are on order!!!!

Anyone ever see this happem?????

I have seen that problem many times. It also does not do the water pump impeller any good. I usually run into that problem when putting a new impeller in the pump.

Don't all the 502 blocks use the same fuel/water pump?

That happened on my 525SC's They had the old style water pumps with a cast rear cap that hooks to the water lines on a 90 degree angle. The new style pump is one piece (plastic) that connects straight out the back. I had to "customize" a few things to change the hose direction. :D

On the 502's in my 311, there is a tube that is a tell tale sign, usually the gasket on the inside goes and allows fuel to get into that area, the gasket/bladder is an easy fix.

BillR, you might want to check the vent tubs under the spark arrester. A friend of mine had one of his fall out at wide open throttle. When he let off the throttle stayed wide open.

Had the same problem on our 500's, just got it back last weekend. It will be nice to have a clean bilge after a run instead of that dang thing dripping.

you should change the oil in there once a year or more, every time you change the impeller, wich should be atleast once a year just change the oil at the same time. It just takes the same oil you poot in your drive. It always has fuel in it, I don't think I ever checked one at the shop that didn't. If you change it often enough you will be fine, if you let it run with the fuel in it you will run into trouble. It is a sign of a rupptured blatter in the fuel pump and you can change just the blatter. You are probably better off just buying a blatter every time you buy an impeller.

Hillbilly's correct as usual, except it's "BLADDER".
Whenever I change the oil in mine (575SCi) it has what appears to be a mixture of oil, fuel, and water in it. I made a suction device to draw the old crap out of the reservoir. Since I'm probably not getting it all, I now change it every other time I change oil @ 25 hrs. I think they all leak water and fuel into the oil reservoir.

I hear ya Stan! All new parts should arrive today and hopefully get installed today. I'll take the old parts and try to figure out hou to rebuild them so this should never be a problem again.
Now if the dam weather would co-operate!!! I have NEVER seen such a cold, or wet, or blowin spring.

Steve, what did you come up with as a suction device? I am trying to invent one that will suck out not only that fliud, but the oil in the blower too. I was thinking along the line of a large syringe. But I need to figure out how to seal some thin flexible hose to it.

You can get a suction devise from any Auto parts store. Its not uncomon in auto mechanics.

Never thought of that. I guess it's too obvious :rolleyes: , but I'll check it out. Bill, I made mine out of a old spray bottle tube and pump. The line can be bent to get down into those tight turns, like the oil reservoir on the fuel/water pump, which is a *****, and the oil resevoirs in the W256. It beats the hell out of taking these things off the motor to drain them.
Not technical, but essentially free and it works.
