Slight vibration -Checking Bravo U-joint?
 

On a Bravo I, is there any way to check the u joint /gimbal for water/condition while the boat is in the the water?

Also are there any other internal lube points beside at the drive shaft?

Noticed a slight vibration while turning right at speed. No pobs any other time.

No, you need to pull the drive and check. Could be the gimble bearing.

The only grease fitting inside the boat in that area is for the coupler.

Thanks, which is the fitting on the transom that greases the gimble bearing? I think there is one on top, one on right side and one other?

Mine was knocking at low speed turning ....idle .... a ticking

The grease fitting for the bearing is the one on the lower right side of the housing....about 4 o-clock. usually if it is already vibrating, it is bad....but it's worth a try.

I wonder if the grease gun will work under water??

Good question. Think I'll put it on my buddy's lift and grease it above the water though!

The drive is relatively simple to get off. Six bolts and one long bolt for the trim. I would slide it off, lube your U joints and lube your gimbal bearing and see if its geting grease inside to the actual bearing. It'll squirt out of the races as long as the hole is lined up properly. You can also check it to see if if worn out or not. If it is, a few wacks with a slide hammer and it'll come right out of there. (Make sure you replace the bearing if you actually remove it). Two guys can do that whole job in around an hour or so. Hillbilly can probably do it in 20 minutes while finishing off an 18 pack. The cable will automatically disconnect and reconnect itsef. You'll only loose a small amount of drive oil as it has it's own pressure fitting that engages when the drive is bolted back up.

Yeah if there is a vibration gease won't bring it back. Not a big deal at all to change, when you shove the drive back on make sure the shift cable is lined up though, every once and a while they will slip to the side and if you bolt the drive up this way, you will have to take it off and now you get to buy a new shift cable too :eek: Job can defenitly not be done in the water though, and probalbe not on a boat lift either(ussualy no where to stand behind the boat)
