4150 adapted to 4500 Intake?
Has anyone ever installed a 4150 Holley on a 4500 Intake Manifold using an adapter?
Are there any pros or cons to doing such a conversion? I would like to avoid the removal of the intake manifold just to try a smaller carb. Any feedback is always appreciated. Russ |
Re: 4150 adapted to 4500 Intake?
I tried it on a pleasure boat with twin 500 ci to see if it would plane easier or run better . One ride and back to the dominator . The 850 acted like a restrictor plate . If your motor is small and you run low rpm the small carb may work better .

Russ,
I have only done that in reverse and it worked fine. Why are you wanting to try a smaller carb are you having some issues, or just something to try? Craig |
Re: 4150 adapted to 4500 Intake?
Craig,
I wanted to try something different. Is a 1050 really the best choice for a 540? No problems with my Nickerson 1050. Just curious. Russ |
Re: 4150 adapted to 4500 Intake?
I would say yes! I would never tell someone not to try something to see how it does, but I really believe the 1050 is the right carb for your motor. On my high compression solid roller 496 I ran an 850 and then went to a 1050, both were stage 5 Nickerson carbs. The 1050 had the 850 beat everywhere! I couldn't find any RPM range where I thought the 850 was better. If you try one it will be interesting to see how it does and I am sure you will post the results!
Good luck! Craig |
Re: 4150 adapted to 4500 Intake?
We tried it with a 572. All the flow numbers indicated 980 cfm would be plenty, But Craigs 1050 stage 5 Nickerson carb :D :D :D kicked the pants off the Carb Shops 980 (4150). I would agree that untill you try it you will never know. We just used an Edelbrock adapter backwards.

I like the idea of using the Edelbrock adapter backwards.
Thanks to everyone for the feedback. Russ |
