Tow Pig/K&N filter on a TBI???
 

Can you use a traditonal 14x3 Round aftermarket air cleaner (made for carbs) on a 92 5.7l chevrolet engine with TBI? I recently bought a 92 k2500 for a tow pig and have had a problem with a heavy miss/stumble just of idle. I was told that an air cleaner such as this kind can cause problems with the sensors?.?.?. I have never seen a traditional round fliter on a TBI before and was wondering if this was the reason why. All the stock filter parts are gone with just the round filter in place. I need to get this thing figured out so I can get the boat to the lake! Any help would be apprectated....

You can use that filter with a TBI set up If the air cleaner itself is different (top & bottom) you may be missing the air temp sensor that should be mounted in the bottom. Not 100% sure when that sensor started pre or post 92???? Check with your local dealer. As far as sensor problems caused by the K&N filter, the only issue with is vehicles that have MAF sensors. The oil in the filter collects on the sensors wire and gives false readings to the PCM ultimately effecting overall drivabilty. Your truck doesn't have a MAF sensor so you don't need to worry about that.

I used a K&N on a 454 MPI and it eventually set of a check engine light due to a piece of dirt getting on the MAF sensor and screwing the readings up. Don't think you would have that problem on a TBI though????

A cheap try would be to change the fuel filter, if it's got alot of trash in it, it could cause your problem(low fuel pressure).
Just a suggestion.

Already did that...Along with plugs,wires,cap and rotor.....FEELS ( I stress Feels) like it's loading up. When I give it 10-20% throttle (same as amount of throttle during cruise) it skips/misses then it gets worse and worse. This is in/out of gear. Just a tad more throttle seems to clean it up.

I remember reading somewhere about an off idle stumble issue with the older GM TBI setups. Do a Yahoo (or Google) search on it. There's tons of info out there on the GM TBI. Also, check your throttle position sensor. A dead spot will cause that.
