can I remove deck hand rails?

My '89 Warlock has 2 stainless rails on the deck. It would reduce the total number of women that could lay out in the sun so they are obviously a problem (not a problem that I've had yet, but..) Are they intended to stiffen the deck or can I remove them? I think they look 'dated'.

the deck feels like I could park my truck on it, so I think I'll get rid of 'em.
