Re: best price on a 502?
I got a 540 short block from DynoFlo for $4000. 1800runsnew.com has complete long blocks for $5K, but heard they were truck block, don't know if it's true or not, Also perfprotech.com has Merc long blocks for $5600.

Re: best price on a 502?
Build your 454 it's a better block than the 502. Spend the money on good rotating assemblies, you can stroke it at this point, and you'll have a good mill that'll go a whole lot longer than a 502.

Re: best price on a 502?
+ if you go to a 502 it'll probably be a gen VI block and none of your accessories will fit. 502 gen IV's a hard to come by.

Re: best price on a 502?
so what if I go with the 540 none of my accesories and heads won't fit?
I dont want to trust another shoty job on the motor work. I went to a so called good machine shope .. I only have 2 bolt mains? |
Re: best price on a 502?
Nothing wrong with 2 bolt mains. How fast do want to turn it? 2 bolt will run out to 5800! I've run plenty of 2 bolts with no problem. If it makes you nervous then you can machine for 4 bolt caps. I would check everything out ahead of time with your heads and accessories before going to a 540. Although the 540 is one stout block! I still say you're better off putting your money into the 454, there's nothing wrong with that block. They can make plenty of power and go the distance too.
Call Randy at Cobra Power with questions about your heads and the 540 block. He'll know just have you casting numbers ready. http://www.cobrapower.com/ 305.893.5018 |
Re: best price on a 502?
My 540 I had to use a different flywheel and balancer, and oil pan. I used the same heads and accessories.

Re: best price on a 502?
All I can tell you is whatever you buy make sure you do it somewhat local. I have heard way to much about B.S. supposed rebuilt engines people have bought online and end up getting a piece of junk that may be rebuilt but was done wrong and after install only pushes 15lbs of oil pressure and stuff like that. At least with a reputable local shop you can deal face to face not over the phone a thousand miles away. JUST MY .02.
