TRS shifting question?
 

What could be the cause of having to rev up the engine
some to get forward gear to take hold? is this some sort of pressure problem? It is a TRS with a merc II tranny.

first check the fluid level. there is a proper way to check it, You have to start the engine for a second then shut it off and run back and check em real quick before it sits to long. If the fluid level is fine it's time to rebuild it cuase it's slipping and will only get worse from there.

I checked the fluid with it running , and with it shut off, and it was fine, but I have never checked it imediatly after shuting it off. Will it make much of a differance checking it that way?

That is the Merc specified way to check the fluid level, they must have some good reason for it. I have never compared one to itself after letting it sit for a while so I don't know how much of a diffrence there would be.

rodshop....does it do it going into reverse? or just forward? there is a special adjustment tool to set the link length, so let me know about the forw/rev question first.

The change in transmission fluid level between running, just after shutdown, and long after shutdown is largely dependent upon the location of your tranny cooler. I use a log cooler which is located below the tranny sump on my 72C/SSMIII setup. The level rises only slightly after shutdown. If you have bellhousing cooler or have your cooler mounter higher in the boat, expect the sump to fill after shutdown. This is where you get in trouble because the level looks fine while shutdown, but is way low while running.

It shifts into reverse just fine. It is only forward gear that I have to rev it up to get to take hold. Thanks for all the help guys, keep it comming. Buizilla let me know about that

Make sure the linkage ball detents are hitting in each foward, neutral, and reverse. it will be located on shifting linkage on transmission

I'm not shure I know what you mean be the linkage ball detents. Although I did check it a little while ago and when you shift it in to forward gear, if you look at the shifting cable it doesn't move -all the way- untill you push the throttle down
about a quarter of the way down. Then it moves the linkage all the way untill it stops. I pulled the motor out of the boat friday to go through it and add a little power, or else I would put the boat in the water and watch the cable with it running
and see what happens. Does this sound like it could be my problem? I shure hope so because that would be an easy fix.
The trans. has never felt like it has ever slipped or given any other problem. But it would be nice to know before I set the motor back in.

SORRY- after rereading your initial post i realized your not running a velvet drive transmision. that was the style transmision i eas refering to.
