How Much HP??
 

I am looking for some HP guestimates, estimates of what it should be making. I have a 540ci Chev 9:1, Dart Pro1 Heads, Gil Exhaust, Whipple 3.3 Intercooled 10lbs Boost, Full MSD, Topped by a Dominator 1050. I am still tracking down the cam specs. What range of power should that combination produce.

Looking for any and all input.

get the cam info and some educated guesses can be made, but until you dyno it no power bragging is allowed. :D

540CID x 1.1HP/CID x 10boost/18 =900HP
Thats with good heads and optimized cam.

OK I have the cam specs.

duration 230 and 236 @.050

My main question is the fact that the builder dynoed them at 675HP at 5600. Seems a little (lot) low. Any ideas??

The cam is killing it, flat tappet I presume?.....probably could use more carb also....

Motor should be making 950hp easy @6200ish

Whipple claims 740hp dropping the 2.3L on a 500efi....

my 540 just dynoed at 944hp@ 5600/962ft lbs @ 4400 blowing thru a stock merc plenum and modified 502 mag intake and its a 8-1 motor w/10 lbs boost(procharged M-3). Are your heads out of the box stock or have you flowed them to see intake to exhaust ratio?2 years ago on dyno my 540 only made 629 hp/697 ft lbs tq at 8 psi,the merlin heads were killing it with there terrible intake to ex ratio,i learned alot about importance of flow #'s,especially ex flow from guys on this bd,your cam sounds identical to my old cam too (except your lift is .050 less),i went up to a 234/240 at RM BUILDERS recomendation this time,i think it helped too,Smitty

Thanks guys. I think I have a larger problem now. About 40 mins into the new motors, I had a rod poking out of the oil pan on the port motor.

Anyone have a pair of 540's sitting on the shelf?

Roller Cam. Lets put it this way. The Whipples on my stock HP 500's made more power.

What did your motor builder/dyno guy say when the motor puked?I can almost imagine too that when it made 675 hp you were told that was safe,reliable hp,am i close?

The builder said no no way the old motors (Stock HP 500's with Whipples) made more, but Speed and RPM's indicated different.

When I told him about the motor puking he asked if I changed the timing. :(

No, it started life as a HP500, then was stroked to a 540 with Scat. GenVI block.

Boy this sounds painfully familar,my 27 ft baja went 79 mph w/502 w/minor upgrades,procharger,merlin heads ,built 540 using same top end and bigger cam expecting decent gain ,made what i considered sub par hp on dyno(629),dyno operator swore the numbers i made were better than my 502 would have made,BOAT WENT 76MPH!!!!It took 3 months of tuning in boat to get speed back and the a additional 6 mph gain. This time around i researched things MUCH better,motor now makes 944hp,962ft lbs tq. Do you know what your intake to exhaust ratio is?The merlin heads i was using had crappy I/E of 60-62%,your blower will push air good thru a stock or mediocre intake port BUT if your exhaust port flow isn't there you will have hard time making any real power,Smitty

Another thing to consider,at least in my case,was 502 was 8.75 base compression and 540 i built was 8-1 base compression. The cubic inches alone should give you 7.5% more power but i have read that the biggest power gains from compression changes are when you go from 8-1 to 9-1 so if you gained 7.5% from just the cubic inches but built real 8-1 blower motors you might have gave up 8-10 % from compresion drop. The good news is if yuo were running 10 psi boost before at 8.75 or 9-1 w/your 502"s you should be able to go up a couple lbs boost on same gas in your 540's at 8-1and see a decent gain,Smitty

I just re-read your post,are you sure its 9-1? did pistons have flat tops or dish?my 540 pistons were J/E racing(not srp's) specifically for blower app and they have dish as pictured,Smitty

I am not sure exactly what the pistons are, the specs I was given was that they are supposed to be 9.1:1. I will know more when they are yanked and I inspect them.

Does anyone know what the Stock HP 500 Carb compresion is?


I may have a solution. I will keep everyone informed as it unfolds.
