Cam Specs?
 

Need to install a new cam in my stock 454 mag. 1989. Anyone know what the cam specs are so I can order the right one?

1988/1989 was a changeover year. Do you know the serial #?

There's a crane part# that was/is a very popular replacement in that engine. I have the PN#somewhere...I'll look. You gonna do both? It makes sense Dave. Cam/lifters...springs matched to the cam, if the ones that came on the Darts aren't...have 'em checked for pressure open and closed and uniformity in the set. Hit crane's website for more info.
The Crane grind I speak of reportedly has stock-like running quality, makes good power everywhere, but makes more tourque at cruise and more HP at 5000 than the stocker. Aftermarket exhaust not a necessity. If I remember...the lobe seperation was 114* no additional water reversion risks. Lotsa good reviews over the years. Gotta remember that was (carbed 454 Mag) about the most poular perf boat engine for 6 or 7 years, so there are good aftermarket choices. They were going in mine if I ever needed to go where you are now, with my Velocity.

when looking to do a straight overhaul on a 454/502 it is easy to put quality aftermarket parts that make mildly more power for little or no more money than some "stock replacement" parts.
Even exhaust now can be had reasonable. Especially with all the competition in the "performance manifiold" market.

Thanks for the input Rip, I'm all over it. As for the exhaust being "reasonable", 2K per engine is not so reasonable for me at this point. Maybe next year. Plus, I want to put some cash toward new props if I ever get over this hump.

2K ? that'll buy CMI's.

performance replacement manifolds with aluminum risers start around $12-1300.

not that they're required to step up in cam a little bit.
