Thanks but I have 4 1/2" tails. I ordered a set of GGB Extreme clamp ons from Trick Marine today. If things go as planned, I will post results by the weekend.

Just remember that the GGB Extremes have NO BAFFLES at all!
My thoughts are that they use any water going through them to move into and out of the channels in there to disrupt the noise.

You will LIKE the sound of the GGB's with water going through them!

Just remember that the built in flappers are rubber and are very stiff when new. When they break in, they sound considerably louder, and may burn out if no water is in there!
Here's a pic of mine...The clamp on's are the same design...

Have you considered plumbing in a solenoid operated ball valve that opened when the mufflers were switched on? That would give you your cooling and you wouldn't have to think about it.

Here's a pic just after installation, and just before my external steering was installed...

While I gained 100 rpm over the old Corsa mufflers that were there, there are many who have lost NOTHING with much higher horsepower then my HP500, when they had open exhaust before!
IMO, the GGB's are the ticket! (or lack of getting one!)

Re: Got pulled over by the noise police today..

Mudball,
Thanks for the information. My set up will be a bit different than yours. I talked to Graham @ GGB today. He told me that I can run the mufflers dry if I remove the rubber flap. That set-up will likely net me a loss of 9-12 decibels. If I need any more of a drop, I can drill a 3/8" hole in the end of my tail and install the rubber flapper. The bit of water will let the flapper live and also deaden some sound. I can expect to get the advertised 12-15 decibels with the flapper and some water. Graham estimated that my motor as it was would produce close to 110 decibels. The only thing I can say is that it was deafening loud.

I believe 110db with dry headers!
Remember that every 3db increase is twice as loud!!

Also, dry headers are the primary reason for at least our new lake noise laws here on Lake Travis...We had to fight for 92db at idle 4 feet back from the boat. We are lucky compared to others!! The lake front owners (of which I am one) wanted some rediculous number, like 80db, if I remember right. NO WAY! I helped fight that..My boat at 89-90db is perfectly quiet, IMO...

Be careful. You can't hear the havock that you are creating from your helm, while you are running dry at 110++db!
At least my house doors and windows shake from dry headers like that. It does not from wet.

Granted though, I LOVE the sound of dry headers on real horsepower, but NOT AFTER 2AM....That's what hosed it here.

The water cops here go only after dry headers, from everything I've seen and heard.
