Just a wild guess. But with looks like an idler puller next to the rods. Maybe from a big Detroit diesel?

Its hard to see in the pic but they have a taper on the top of the small end w/full floating pins,Smitty

Here is an aluminum rod that you can run in your boat. Imagine a 6.385" rod in your 540 CID that weighed 570gms.

OK, I can do that... Do you think a Bravo-1 can take 8000rpm? :D

Same conclusion I have come to. Turning mine 5600-5700, over the top of torque peak by 400-500rpm. I know I could go faster with a bigger prop, but hey, the acceleration is awesome.

Will these survive for 500 hrs? Most aluminum rods have a short life span.

Re: anyone seen rods like this?

According to the Dept of Energy in Oakridge, TN they will survive at least 100K miles. Several gas and diesel OEMs are talking to Jager about this technology. You don't need bearings with these either.

They look like Eagle ESP rods
Heat treated stress relieved certified 4340steel 2-piece rod.
The 3-D stroker design offeres less weight and same strength.
Just a guess :D

Notice anything about the rod bolt placement on the Jager rod?

There from a ford 5.4 gt40 motor. It was ran at wot for 100 hours then thrown away. The main saddles in the aluminum block got tore up a little. Some lucky SOB working at ford got a hold of it. I guess the gt40 is the ferrairi looking car with dual ohc and innercooled supercharger. Heres some pics, the rods caught my eye because they are cut down to a vee on the top where the pin goes thru,Smitty

They appear splayed inward......aimed inwards,
towards the pin.

David,
They are both manufactured by Manley.

Re: anyone seen rods like this?

JT, you are correct. With the bolts splayed the stress is now distributed up the beam of the rod.

Chris,if you don't need brgs why are they pinned for them? Did you ever see the crankshafts that came out about 15 or 20 years ago made out of a composition material (it was kevlar or carbon fiber or something like it),they said they tested it with no rod brgs or mn brgs but i never seen or heard about it again. If you zoom in on this rod you can see the tapered small end,in your opinion do you think it was to help oil get to pin or what?Just curious what your opinion is,thanks,Smitty

Re: anyone seen rods like this?

Smitty,
These in the pic have pins for the old school guys. Sometimes with new technology you have to take baby steps, so Jagers rods can run either way. Due to the lubricity that the surface has bearing clearance of .0005" can be run on rod journals. Before the nay sayers start, these rods were outlawed in NHRA where they were being run in Pro Stock very, very, very successfully. The actual rods in the Pro Stock engines I saw had 150 passes on them and all rods as far as stretch goes were within .0001" of spec.

Pin bores in the pistons in Cup cars and other high rpm engine applications are oblong horizontally. What has been found is the pin bore if left perfectly round distorts due to the higher rpm and the loads that are put on the pin support area. Pin flex is also an area they have been working on. It would be my guess the beveled little end has something to do with pin flex and reducing it during high rpm.

Re: anyone seen rods like this?

Smitty, good way to take some weight out of the reciprocating piston end. Most of the pin load is down where this pin end journal is still bigger. Chris, interesting idea there on those rod bolts, angled off the vertical axis. Guess this would possibly add strength by shifting the axis loading? What is the idea on the bearings, I assume some sort of material treatment on the surface or coating?

I love this out of the box rocket science stuff!

Re: anyone seen rods like this?

Ray,
The 7075 material goes through a chemical and electrical process which transforms the outer material into a shell that Jager refers to as Alumini. Tensil strength goes from around 70K PSI to 320kPSI. A by product of the transformation is the lubricity of the outer Alumini shell. Minimal oil is needed.

The first test engine was a OEM cast crank 400 SBC with 23 degree heads and a twin homemade dual blower set up with 144's. Car was a front engine rail Nostagia piece that ran 4.80's in the 8th mile. He put 500 passes on the cast crank and it is still together. Yes I agree cool stuff.
