Re: Whats the best way to add more power 350

A SBC needs to breath so dump the stock cast iron Mercury exhaust manifolds. Install Stainless Marine exhaust manifolds ( thats what I but on mine) or something similar there are a lot out there. Thru hull exhaust drop the thru prop. Cam change will help a lot. The best help is Dennis Moore's SBC marine book if you can find one there out of print. I found a used one on the web. Now you are controlled by the computer and here is something I found out from a boat builder. Your 300 HP is actually 275 HP so I was told. You will need to get the computer reprogrammed after you decide on what changes you plan on making. The list of changes you can make on a SBC can go on and on. First put your budget together and then work on you best bang for your bucks. I had a 250 HP 5.7 so I've made a lot of other improvements basically from the block up and picked up close to 10 MPH so far.

if it has a alpha drive dont bother, buy a faster boat with a big block and a bravo drive, The alpha has some serious hp limitations unless you like workin on drives. I'd talk to Travis here on the board he makes some big power with a small block.

If memory serves there are several on this forum that are running Alpha's well past 300 HP. Drive shower, syn. gear oil and NO neutral drops.

I would not say several, more like a lucky few.

Best bang for the $$$$ is to get your prop labbed and make sure your are dialed in just short of the rev limiter.

You can do a lot of things, but it takes money... once you pull off one of those stock exhaust manifolds, you'll understand why most people replace them... They are heavy!!!! And a new exhaust will allow engine to breath easier for future mods. Check out revolution exhaust on Ebay for starters, www.trickmarine.net, there are many other good ones out there, again, how much do you want to spend.

A ALPHA will handle 400Hp with little problem in a SMALL BLOCK. Just stay away from gettin air and jackrabbit starts. Run a good lube and a drive shower. Crockett and Teague both say 400hp fine with an ALPHA. Big blocks and alphas well thats another story........With twins you can probally get away with a little more hp.....Ask the guys who have alphas and small blocks how much THEY have found them to handle.....15-20hp per mph is safe to figure......

throw that stock motor away... Lets build ya a new one

Don't worry about your alpha. be nice to it and you won't hurt it. I run 560-570 hp small block on my alpha. i try to break it and I haven't yet. Only thing I do is start it in gear all the time, cause it idles at about 800-900 rpm, otherwise it would slam into gear if I didn't. Went From a stock 1989 270 hp 350 chevy to this 383 I am running, I gained 20 mph with this motor from 58 mph on gps to 78 on gps

I, and a few others have installed Prochargers on 350Mags. I have gained 20 mph with just the 5 psi supercharger and a Stern Jack. I would recommend adding an oil cooler, especially if you plan on higher rpm.
