There is a whole thread on the pros and cons of removing the transmission or not. Either way, you can have it out in a couple hours. Some boats get a little tricky due to having to remove accessories. Mine is a puzzle...

Basically it boils down to disconnecting fuel, electrics, water, and oil, taking some tension with the lift, and unbolting the mounts and bellhousing bolts. Slide the motor forward about 1.5" to disengage the flexplate splines, do some fancy angling and pull it out. Honestly, I think it's way easier to pull it with the transmission still attached, but that's me (SSM III setup). I also vastly prefer fitting up the bellhousing and tranny out of the boat. If you are using a new motor block or bellhousing, it pays to check the runout before bolting it all together.

It's worth pulling the drive to check alignment if it hasn't been done in a while. If your engine compartment is restricted lengthwise, it will also help you by not having to push the motor forward or angle it up quite as much to disengage the tailstock from the drive input shaft.

It's only six nuts, the rams and some steering! You can't be serious?!?!?! Just pull the drives! Doing it any other way is a waste of time. When it comes time to re-fit it'll be so easy with the trany's out.

Pull the drive first. You need to check alignment when you put the engine back in, anyway.
