Busted Imco Lower

2 Attachment(s)
Since I upgraded power this winter, I figured I might as well get a better drive than my stock Bravo 1. So, I found an "XR" upper attached to an Imco SC lower. I figured this would do the job. As we all know, when you buy used, you get used and sometimes abused. It is always a crap shoot. I was told the drive was fresh, the gears appeared to be new. Anyway, after 17 hours of running, ( I will admit I run it hard but with care by going easy out of the hole and when in the air), I end up with a broken lower 20 miles away from home.
I just got the lower apart . The gears look fine, the only broken part is what is pictured. The vertical shaft. I will be ordering a shaft kit to repair it. I have very little drive experience. Will replacing the shaft effect the back lash of the gears? My thought is yes it would, but I don't know by how much. Is there an easy way to check the lash?

Who has the best deals on parts from Imco? I will try to give Fred a call in the a.m.

Since you broke the Imco, you might want to consider the Max Machine parts.

He gave me all the specs needed to put the shaft back in. The nut that holds the drive gear to the vertical shaft should be torqued to 125 ft lbs. The bearing carrier nut should be torqued to 150 ft lbs. I should end up with .012 -.015 back lash in the gears when all done. There were a few other specs, but I dont have them here. I dont remember them all and dont want to post bad information.

www.tpmarine.com does. Call Don at 602-438-1361, he's real friendly and always easy to get a good deal out of. Fred and Don are the only people I will buy aftermarket parts from.

Dick,
Thanks for all the help. As you know, if I can ever do anything for you, please don't hesitate to call.
It figures that Imco did away with the oil hole. I see no reason for it being there, except to sell shafts. The entire internals of the drive is submerged in oil, why would they want to sling oil to the bearing? Do stock Mercury 'XR' shafts have the same oil hole?

Re: Busted Imco Lower

I got the drive back together. I took the boat out for a run today and all seems o.k. This is the first time I took apart and repaired a drive. Thanks to Mr Gadgets for all the help and advise. He made it alot easier for me.

By the way, not only did Imco do away with the oiling hole, they made the upper section of their new shafts alot thicker as well. I don't think that the shaft will be an issue for me anymore.
