Oil Temp???
What temp range should I be looking for? I seen it at 230* is that safe?
Thanks |
Re: Oil Temp???
Most here seem to agree that you should see at least 212* to keep moisture out of oil. 230* is fine for non-synthetic oil.

Re: Oil Temp???
I'm usually 220-230... Mobil 1 15-50.

We have ran our oil a lot hotter in a race car up to 320* but that is only for one race. Main thing is that non-synthetic breaks down a lot faster at higher temps. After a hard run last weekend in 100* weather and probably 85*+ water, i saw 265* which I am OK with. Running M-1 v-twin |
Re: Oil Temp???
Hey Wobble..how ya do'in.
I too can hit 265* oil temp too after a long WOT romp. Been using Valvoline 20/50 synthetic which according to Hydocruiser, is pretty good stuff. But, I recently picked up and plan to change to the Mobile 1 V-twin 20-50. So, we have oil that can withstand some pretty high temps. That's a good thing! I was told that oil temps over 240-250 could possibly cause damage to the seals. What do you think about that? Or, anything else that the high oil temps might cause damage to. Thanks....I'm always look'n to learn :o) |

Of course they only in for a few months. On my boat they lasted 2 years with occasional high temps of 290*, no problem yet. Did you do the tandem cooler thing yet? |
Re: Oil Temp???
Nope, not yet. Not sure if I'll get to it too soon either. I have quite the "honey do" for list around the house for this summer so time is kind of limited. I've been lucky with the boat this season. It's been running well. No issues at all. Noth'n broke yet so no real good reason to drag her home and tear into anything (knock on wood). It's almost scary. But ya never know.
There's another guy that has a similar oil temp issues. He has twin 468's in a Scarab Panther. He put on larger oil pans, 12 qts. I think, and saw little improvement. I kind of had my doubts about bigger pans helping to lower oil temps. I was thinking that with bigger pans oil temps would be about the same, just take longer time to get the oil temp up there. I want to do the piggy back oil cooler thing at some point as it is something I'm sure will lower my oil temps. Plus if/when I post positive results the info might help others with the same issue. |

Mobil is back to the drawing board with their Goldcap oils... |
Re: Oil Temp???
Remember we are seeing 15W-50 shear down as the base is not taking the heat and shear.
Explain????????? |
