Where to mount GPS speedo antenna

I'm looking for ideas and pictures where to mount a gps speedo antenna I know it will go just about anywhere facing up but is there a common place to mount it.

Under the dash!

I have 3 of them mounted upright setting on long stainless screws (wire tied) sort of a shelf.

Sirius always works
GPS Speedo always works
Chart Plotter always works

The dash or other area under the fiberglass is fine!
Can you tell I hate antennas needlessly attached to the outside of my boat :D

Remember in a sense you are just putting it under a big piece of plastic or wood.

Wood, plastic, fiberglass and metal between the antenna and the satellite can interfere with some antennas receiving a good signal. You may be able to mount the antenna under the dash out of sight, but you should test it first by positioning it there with a temporary mount to be safe. Once you know it works properly then make the mounting permanent.

I strongly disagree wood and plastic will have little to no effect although metal will kill the signal.

Take the advice and try it first but you will depending on the structure loose a insignificant amount of signal.

Mines under the dash too. Seems to work fine. I temp rigged it under there until I knew it worked. I used a small piece of angle iron to sit mine on. The angle iron is screwed to the dash and the reciever is secured to the angle with velcro.

Remember something here "Old School" Technology does not apply. Our Sat signals are much hotter than they used to be. Remember the 10' dishes+ we used to use about 10 to 15 years ago!

Now you can actually use your XM or Sirius in the house depending of course on your location and structure. I know we have a long way to go and this may not be quite as good but try it for yourself before drilling unnecessary holes in your boat.

The point your missing is the thickness of the material has an effect on the signal. Every boat manufacturer has different standards.

I did'nt say it would not work, I said it MAY not work, test it first and then you know you won't have a problem. Better to be safe than sorry.
