Broke my drive!!!
 

Broke my XZ drive on my 28 Pantera yesterday. Now what drive do you guys recommend?

Currently runnig 600+ HP and planning on moving up to 700 next season. Boat weighs 5300# dry.

I'm looking at an XR, Teague and Imco. Any input would be appreciated!!!!

I had an IMCO and went to Max Machine. They seem to be the best, at least they seem to go the longest between failure. Give Aaron a call out there, he'll fix you up

I recently broke an Imco SC vertical shaft. The new shaft was alot better designed than the old. 680 hp, 4000 lb boat dry.

yes it will pantera, your lower is the same as an xr lower the different between the two is in the upper!!!!

Do you know what broke in the XZ drive? Was it upper gears breaking teeth or a shaft? I have seen lots of different things break, due to several things. What were you doing when it broke or shortly before.. Any airborn tactics without throttle control?? Driven with care the XZ should be good for your setup. I have a friend with larger HP and bigger boat with standard Bravo.. 8 yrs on it.. I would suggest going to the XR upper and proper setup. You can break anything they have out there in the Bravo line up, but a properly setup drive should live on your boat...

We have a brand new lower unit in stock. It was put on a boat for 20 minutes until I found out the ratio was not what I ordered. I believe its a 1" shorty as well.

I'll post again after I check tomorrow.

It was the upper that failed. We were actually going through a no wake zone when it locked up. The gear attached to the input shaft appears to have tried to push itself through the case.

We were on an inland lake, no rough water or anything that should have caused the failure.

I think I'll get an Imco Extreme or XR upper and have the lower inspected. Hope to get this accomplished by the weekend!!! Loto in 2 weeks!!

Sounds like the pionion gear tooth lodged between gears pushing it out. guess :eek:

Problem solved. Ordered an XR from BAM today. Should be here and on the boat Thursday.

Can't understand what happened to the XZ. I baby the throttle until on plane and the boat has never left the water on our inland lakes.

Oh well, welcome to perfromance boating I guess!!!

Thanks for all the input. Rather than rebuild my lower and buy an upper, I just decided to get a brand new drive. I'll rebuild the lower and pick up an upper in the fall as a spare set up.

CONGRATS, Good move XR is a nice drive only weak point is the pinion shaft and with your set up should almost be bullet proof!

We now have 35 hrs on our Max Machine Worx drives, so far so good.
38' Kevlar TopGun with 800+hp blower motors, 11,000lbs+ loaded they also stand behind them for 1 full year.

I get about 85 hours between breaking something in a fully max machine worx upgraded xr drive,I'm not sure now as i had 725-750hp for last few years and it is signifigantly more now but i have 45 hours on current drive,the last 15 with 950 hp(although i don't have much wot on it yet). The size of prop seems to really determine when a drive breaks,I ran 675 hp thru a stock bravo for over 100 hours with a 26 pitch,went up to 700 hp and a 28 pitch on my 4500lb/27 ft boat and almost immediately sheared gears off. Max seems the best so far although they still do break,if you have serious power its best to have a spare drive if your boating season is short,Smitty

THopefully this one will last a while. Thanks for the info Smitty and your number. I was pretty busy yesterday and just decided to order a new XR from BAM.

I'll get my lower cleaned up with new bearings etc.. and try to locate an upper for a spare.

I just purchased a new upper but need a spare. I have a spare case, need gears, bearings, and top cap. IMCO wants something like $900 for the top cap. :eek:

So far 5500 rpms with the smaller props and 5000rpms with our 4 blade 29s.
We seem to have hit a wall with this set up! We should be up against our 6000rpm rev limiter with the smaller props.
I'm beginning to think that our new Max Billet drives may rob quite a bit more power than the Bravos did.
We did add 2 1/2" spacers to the Max shorties to lower them 1/2" more than our stock Bravos were located to fix our porpoising problem." it worked well "
She planes right out now and also pulls very hard right up to 5500rpms like a small big power boat, but hits that wall at 85mph. Which is only a few mph faster than my 600Scs and stock Bravos took us.
The way she pulls now, my Bravos would have been toast just planning her out. We will keep dialing her in until we get her in the 90s. There never fast enough!

I have similiar power in a 36' Apache with IMCO Extreme SC's, 32" Bravo 1's turning 5400 rpms. I was told by Bob Saccenti the boat weighs between 9500 and 10500 lbs.

It's an interesting comparison.
