Knocking Noise from Borg Warner??
 

undefined Im not sure what this knocking noise is and where it is comming from. The first time it happened we replaced a bad U-Joint and it went away for about 15 Minutes. Now the Noise is back and the U-Joints are Fine.

Its a Borg Warner Transmission connected to an Arneson Drive that was Freshly re-built from Arneson ($4,500 Rebuild) Is there a chance this is comming from within the Transmission? If so ... what would be causing it?

I have 2 Videos I took of it which can be viewed with Quicktime's Viewer. The Videos are one of the transmission and one of the drive. I couldnt upload them because the size is over what offshore only's Limits are. However, I will gladly email it to anyone that wants to see it. Just let me know your email address and Ill send it.

When you listen to the Drive on the outside, It makes no noise at all. You can only hear th knocking inside the engine compartment. Any Info would be greatly appreciated.

Is it comming from the bellhousing maybe? You might have something loose in there. Are you SURE it's not a rod knock? Doesn't sound good. Email the vids over.

If its not in gear, it doesnt make the noise so, i know its not a Rod. But thats what it sounds like. It makes the knock in forward and reverse. If it was in the bellhousing it would most likely make the sound all the time wouldnt it? I emailed them over to you. See what ya think.

Let me ask you a question.

Is the knock only when the boat is in gear and idling at low speeds?

Does it go away when you give it more throttle?

Yes ... It only knocks while its in gear but it doesnt seem to go away with any extra throttle. It just knocks faster.

It is common to hear a small knock if you have an idle that is not steady (large cam) as the load on the UJ's is not constant and they will tend to knock but stop when the idle is bumped up to more constant load.

I had a customer with the same problem and it turned out to be his tranny. (He rebuilt everything and the tranny last)

I think i know what you mean by the small knock ... It would make a small knocking noise at low RPM's right before it would stall out before the carb was adjusted. Soon as i got the Motor running smooth there was no more knock. But this is a Loud Knock. I taped a video of it and If youd like to see it , Just give me your email addy and I will send it over.
