Can I remove Port power steering pump and hoses???
My steering runs off the starboard motor power steering pump. The port motor still has the power steering pump hooked up and the hoses are just connected together and both are connected to oil cooler.
Any reason why they have to be connected to the oil cooler? Can I remove the port power steering pump and hoses? Reason I'm asking is that I might need the parts for the starboard engine. I had a shop put a new coupler in a little while back and they screwed up one of my hoses on the starboard engine, hopefully they will stand good for it, I'll know tomorrow, but if not, I was thinking of taking off the parts from the port motor... Thanks for your input!!! |

Sure , take it off. There come from Merc with PS and they are not designated right or left. When the go in boats with twins , you wind up with "extra parts" :D

I wish mine had power steering on both engines.

All this time I have been running two pumps and only needed one  I'm glad I don't have one on the center engine :D

Beware when removing this pump! You will need to put something in its place to take up the room in the belt system. You will either have to install another pump in its place or install an idler pulley and new belt.
Sorry! JohnS. :( |

Why not keep it and make them both work? I like redundancy in my systems, especially steering. If you loose the motor with the pump, it's not fun limping back home with no PS.
Or worse, what if the belt fails on that motor while you're at speed? I've done this and it scared the chit outta me. Enough that I went and added redundant pumps after that incident. All you would need is one "proportioning valve", and some hose fittings, seeing that you already have the rest of the hardware. Good luck, Brian |

Fountain utilizes both pumps. Maybe you guys need to step up to the plate and get a real boat. ;)

Re: Can I remove Port power steering pump and hoses???
haven't seen too many fountains chine walk alot of velocities though esp the 32s
as for hooking both up fountain and sonic both have been known to but you have to use a metering block / propositioning valve |
Re: Can I remove Port power steering pump and hoses???
I'm running a sonic 31ss with the 454 carbs. So, currently no belts on the port steering pump. The port steering pump hoses are just connected together rather than connecting to the steering.
The shop agreed that it was their doing after seeing the problem and are ordering me a new hose, not sure if it will be here by the weekend. If need be, I'll take the hose of the port motor to get me running. Running two pumps to one steering is a great idea...... What exactly is a metering block / propositioning valve and where would they tie in??? |

Here's a hydraulic schematic that Latham send me when I did my system. Latham calls it an 030 valve, others call it a proportioning valve. It supplies pressure from one pump until that pressure is removed, then switches to the other pump. Both pump outputs tie into it, and the output goes to your filter, and then to the helm.
Call Latham, they can set you up. Brian |

Thanks P4, I was just about to ask if you had a schematic.

One other fitting you'll need - the return from the helm comes back to a tee fitting, and branches off to both PS coolers for the return circuit on the pumps.
Cuda, I must have been reading your mind. :D Good luck, Brian |

Call Latham, they can set you up. Brian I have attached the steering cable to the power steering ram mounted on the Bravo transom assembly. I have a second power steering ram and the port engine also has a power steering pump fitted. Is it just a matter of hooking it up, or do I also need a proportioning valve? |
Pull the port ram off and use just the starb Saginaw valve. If you plan on running both pumps (recommended) then you'll need a simple proportioning valve or two one way valves into a "T".
External steering isn't much safer than internal if you only run one pump. If you ever lose a pump (or the motor driving it) at speed you'll know what I'm talking about. |
