MEFI-3 or MEFI-4?

I am new to this site and have been lurking in the background for almost a month now. Very informative site with lots of good posts. Now for my problem. I own a 38 ft. cruiser (I know, I know) with twin 2001 454 MPI MAG Horizon engines. The engines ran great until my boat was struck by lightning 2 weeks ago. Luckily, we were not on the boat and the boat didn't sink. Both MEFI-3 ECM's are toast and I am told that these are no longer available for this engine. I am trying to determine if trying to find somebody (Whipple, Arizona Speed) to adapt the MEFI-4 for these stock engines makes sense or should I just find used or rebuilt MEFI-3 ECM's and forget about it. The stock program for these engines wasn't too bad and if I could find somebody to duplicate that or improve on it would be great. Thanks for your help. Mark

I know that when an ASM kit is installed they have you install a new harness and a MEFI 4 ECM. I don't see why they couldn't be able to help you with that. Sounds kinda easy for them to do from what I have seen in there kits.

Stick with the 3, use your existing harness. They are out there if you look. I found one on ebay the other day for $400.00 brand new in the box. I think ASM has them also.

Tell the ins.co. to replace them with new merc units and if they are not available then new 425HP's would be great.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll try cobra marty's approach first :D So far the insurance company has been fine to deal with but the going is slow trying to determine the extent of the damage. They tell me that once we receive the first round of parts more will surely need to be replaced. 800XCR, my e-mail address is [email protected]. I assume that getting the stock or improved program won't be a problem. Mark

i am a mercury dealer, get the serial numbers off your engines call your mercury dealer and he can get you mefi 4 update kits. or he can get you mefi 3 remans if still avalible. the reason they did away with mefi 3 is because gm wouldn`t make them anymore

There telling me when you order a 3 your get a 4 with a adapter harness. There going to be outrages for merc.

They have already started putting the 4's on the procharger and whipple set up.It should not be hard to find a stock map.

If ya find a 3 its going to have to be remapped anyway.

There is also 2 different #3's

Ck with Mark at Precision Marine in La 504-469-7463 his is having the harness made for them also.

I'm pretty sure I have at least a couple of mefi 3's and can flash them for whatever stock program you need. $500 each including the old ones as trade in. Contact me at [email protected] if you'd like.

Re: MEFI-3 or MEFI-4?

I called Mark today to discuss this. He said that he should be able to help but he believed that there was a slight software difference between the outdrive model and inboard model. I also called a Mercury dealer like cobra marty and outdrive man said and he gave me the MEFI-4 update kit part numbers for these engines. I assume the updated ECM's will have the proper maps already flashed into them. The only question now is at what price?

Maghag, Did you ever sort out your ECU problem? Is there a physical difference between the MEFI3 and the MEFI4? Do you still have your bad MEFI3 boxes? I might be interested. Thanks, Marty.

Re: MEFI-3 or MEFI-4?

No External Physical Differance Just The J-1 And J-2 Connectors Are Pinned Differently. More Than A few hundred Per Kit Is Highway Robery Merc Reman Sells These Kits Very Cheap as far as boat parts go

Re: MEFI-3 or MEFI-4?

Are the J1 and J2 connectors the same? How many pin are they?
