Re: speedometer stoped working.
If it's the factory tube type speedo, there is a water pickup on the back of the boat. It can either be a small hole on the front of the lower unit of the outdrive or you might have a tube running down the back of the transom. In either case, it's probably blocked with a piece of seaweed or wood chunk. You'll have to try picking it out, drilling it out or pressure it out from the tube from the inside of the boat.
Hope that helps you.... just yell if you need further info... Good luck!!!! |
Re: speedometer stoped working.
First off check the pickup in the drive, unhook the hose from the top of he lower and blow some air through the drive. This will probably fix your problem. you may have to use a small drill bit to clear the passage in the front of the drive if you have gotten something wedged in there solid. If the drive is clear and it still doesn't work then unhook the hose from the back of the speedo and blow air from the speedo end towards the pickup. see if it flows freely. I'm sure you'll find the problem in one of those two places.

Re: speedometer stoped working.
Thanks for your help guys, also my speedo is liquid filled, how do I fill it and with what kind of fluid?

Re: speedometer stoped working.
I'd bite the bullet and buy a GPS speedo. I got tired of replacing and unclogging speedo pickups that weren't very accurate to begin with..

While you are checking, make sure the 1/4" rubber tube that goes from your transom to your drive isn't cut or disconnected. |
Re: speedometer stoped working.
Actually, you can fill it. The face unsrews from the body. You have to remove it from the dash and hold it level, then unsrew the face and bezel. It may take a new o-ring, fill with glycerin, tighten face and bezel. Or send it in to the manufacter and have them do it.
GPS is still better. |

Re: speedometer stoped working.
Rush,
I have the same prob with my 97 fountain. It seems to happen quite frequently with shallow water. I finally listened to everyone, GPS is the only way to go. |
