engine over heating problem
stb eng over heats over 3200 rpms. running big offshore pick ups big kpm strainers that are clean, running 20lbs water pressure, fresh rebuilt raw water pumps, crossovers, no thermastat, flowing water out the exhaust but when i lean on it temp climbs right up, but it always runs 20 degrees hotter than its twin brother. yanked off the water pump before i went out today everything seems perfect impeller is in great shape. any suggestions? thx ratman

Re: engine over heating problem
Hi ratman,
you didnt mention what motors you have so this is kind of shooting in the dark.... when you had the pump apart where there any scores high rpm overheat alot of times is cavitation in the pump caused by scores |
Re: engine over heating problem
goodt, 577 n/a's 9.4 to 1 comp. the pump was rebuilt and appears to be in great shape. i will take it apart inspect it a little better and replace the impeller.

Re: engine over heating problem
Have you had an impellar go bad in that engine? Any chance of a broke off vane plugging something?
|
Re: engine over heating problem
no, fresh motors, all new hoses, raw water pick ups, freshly rebuilt water pumps,

Re: engine over heating problem
Have you tried switching sending units or gauges? Is oil temp the same on both?
|
Re: engine over heating problem
its getting hot the problem is not with the gauge or sender. my oil temp gauges are not wired properly and are not reading, i am having the oil temp gauges rewired this week.

Re: engine over heating problem
ttt, any ideas folks? lil help here, thx

Re: engine over heating problem
Brand new engines, but are the oil coolers new? Also any air leaks on the suction side of the raw water pickup with reduce flow.
BT  |
Re: engine over heating problem
all the coolers are new with the exception of the p/s cooler, which happens to be on that motor thats getting hot. i will try swapping raw water pumps from one engine to the other and will back flush everything when i swap the pumps. any other ideas? thx ratman

Re: engine over heating problem
So what are the temps? If you have good flow from the exhaust I don't see how you could have a big problem unless you're really lean or way too much timing or something. Pressure means you pump is supplying but means nothing to flow,,but the exhaust flow tells you it's getting thru. I know from your nice hardware you probably know more than me , just trying to think this over with ya.

Re: engine over heating problem
Do you run tstats and circulating pumps? If so, either of those could be suspect.

Re: engine over heating problem
If the timing has moved, IE dist issues or slipped, it will cause the temo to run up like you are talking about. It will also melt the engine quick. Get a timing light with an advance dial and check your total advance.

Re: engine over heating problem
Ratman,
These are the engines that the guy did the not so great dyno job on? You said the guy didn't really do any tuning on the dyno. I'm thinking along the lines of thunderusone. Timing? Carb Jetting? Are they set up like the other engine that's not getting hot? Lean carb/too much timing can make it get hot when you lean on it. Check the ps cooler, but check your plugs too. See how they look, and compare them to the other engine. You don't want to cook a new mill. :) |
Re: engine over heating problem
no thermastats, no circulating pumps, im running crossovers,

Re: engine over heating problem
1 Attachment(s)
heres a pic of the dyno numbers bsfc #'s were .52 which should be enough fuel. i have 7 lbs on one motor and 5.5 to 6 lbs on the other at wfo throttle.

Re: engine over heating problem
I still say it is timed to high on total advance.

Re: engine over heating problem
hillbilly, i live on the water across from the oldsmar flea market, hillsborough and racetrack road, i may have it handled by friday though as i will start working on thing today. i keep you posted as to what i find. thx for your offer to help.
will check the total timing first and share my findings, thx ratman |
