traces of oil out of dip stick
I have a 1995 24' Baja Outlaw with a 454 Mag EFI. It has approx 112 original hours. If I'm out for the day and running in the normal 3000 + or - range no problem. If I run it WOT for a distance and stop and pop the hatch I notice alittle oil leaking at the insertion of the dip stick. It's a new dip stick so I can't blame a cracked dip stick. What gives with this. Any clue or possible reasons for this. Thanks

Re: traces of oil out of dip stick
Pure and simple-BLOWBY on piston rings, probably not terrible though. I would check your valve cover vents to pcv valves, might cure it by aiding ring seal. Smitty

articfriend, would it be ring seal for marine engines or can it be automotive type? Should it be a sparing amount?

Re: traces of oil out of dip stick
My '99 454 Magnum had a pcv valve. If yours has one, I would check that first. Next, there is a line going to the flame arrestor that acts as your breather. That must be clear as well. If not, it may be time for a leakdown test.

Re: traces of oil out of dip stick
When the blow-by becomes so excessive that the PCV Valve system can't remove it, it has to go somewhere! Else the crankcase pressure would become excessive and the engine would explode. The place that it goes is back thorough the hose to the air cleaner - THE WRONG WAY!!! Of course it carries any oil in the valve cover back with it and that's what you mop up two or three times a month or week if it's really bad. Bottom line?? It's time for a new PCV valve and or breather..
Hopefully that's all that is wrong. |
Re: traces of oil out of dip stick
Just recently had blocked breathers and the same thing happened. Almost a quart of oil in a day. Took care of the breather and that fixed it.

Also so make sure your not overfiling the crank case .

Re: traces of oil out of dip stick
also, make sure you are not getting any water in the oil.....

Re: traces of oil out of dip stick
If you only have breathers and there not clogged you can add a PCV valve which will help some. But if your blow-by is getting that bad your motor is becoming tired. Hopefully its one of the above mentioned blockages, good luck.
