on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
one engine still gets hot wheni pin the sticks. it will run at 4k rpm ok but it is always 20* hotter thean the other eng. when i go wfo the temp steadily climbs till i back of to 3000 or so then it comes back down. i have huge offshore water pic up all new hoses, put new w/pump impeller and hsg on last week. all my coolers are new ecept the p/s cooler which happens to be on the eng that gets hot bit i ran a piece of heavy wire thru every tube in it and there are no blockages. i was thinking perhaps i hav a restriction in my exhaust but water is flowing out both pipes. any suggestions on what i might try next. thx in advvance, ratman

How is your water pickup?

Bravo drive? Check the hose from the drive outside the boat all the way in. Have seen them go bad inside and restrict flow just enough to cause overheat at wot. What a b*%#h to find!! --- Jer

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
Had same problem 2 seasons ago. I replaced sea pump impellar, checked all hoses, checked the inlet tube at the drive, replaced thermostat...everything.......
I finally removed the thermostat completely and that cured the problem. I replaced thermostat with a high-flow unit that I bought from Summit Racing. Been working great ever since. |

I would pull the thermostat too, they are mostly junk, ive seen new ones no open, stick open, not open all the way. Easy check anyway.

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
Then get a piece of clear hose to use on one of the manifold hoses. Look for air bubbles especially at the high rpms.

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
Check your manifolds and tailpipes for restriction. Do you have a water pressure guage? If so, what does it read at WOT?

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
Removing The Tstat Isnt A Real Good Idea,W,ith It Out The Water Will Move To Quickley Threw The Block And Not Absorb Any Of The Heat,The Temp Guage Will Show Cooler Because The Water Is Always Going To Be Cold As It Now Moves Very Fast,The Tstat Is Designed To Slow The Water Inorder For The Water To Remove The Heat!Same Deal In Your Car,Hre It All The Time! You Really Need To Find The Problem And Fix It!Merc Or Who Ever Does Not Install Parts That You Dont Really Need!! Good Luck!

no bravo drives, i have ssm #3 drives bw trans, no eng water pump, just raw waterpump. no thermastats crossovers one engine is perfect, the other runs 20* hotter all the time and is ok to 4k rpm but starts climbig when i run it wfo. engines were dyno had .52 bcfc . only did is one engine has the power steering cooler and thats the one that gets hot but he cooler is clera the other coolers are new

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
It was asked but not answered. Do you have water pressure gauges? This is a must check item at this point. If you don't have them, get them.

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
If you have engine flushes make sure the check valve isn't clogged. I've seen this many times and it's easy to overlook.

It doesn't surprise me, I've read countless threads where people have cooling issues with crossover tubes. Do a search and you'll get some more ideas. Good luck. |

You have a restriction somewhere. You need to find it before something bad happens. Start swapping parts or measure the pressure at various points along the waters path.

Rat ... pull the Thermo ......I agree with the other guys ....good place to start .... ..and they do hang ..even new ...

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
i am NOT running thermostats.

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
the gauge is correct there is no doubt thats it is getting hot. the engine that runs hot has 10 more lbs of oil pressure and has since day one. any ideas couldn't hurt , thx

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
Maybe there is a Coney Island Whitefish clogged in your one motor pickups after you nailed that porn star on the deck of the boat. |
Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
I had a similar problem and found it in the power steering cooler.

Re: on engine still overheats at wfo..any ideas
Where is your water pressure gauge hooked up? At the drain plug maybe? And are they mechanical or sensor? I would switch them to be sure they are accurate.
The following will narrow the problem down for you. Temporarily remove the power steering cooler (use a pipe) and test it. If no change, verify the pressure just before the exhaust (put a temporary tee in the line). If you have 15PSI there, then switch exhaust. If no change, you have an internal engine restriction, and you will need to tear it down, before you have a bigger issue. Good Luck! |
