Default Demon 850 carb/victor intake on a 454 mag. Anything to gain?

I have a '97 carb'd 454 mag in my 22 donzi classic. My little brother is putting a tunnel ram setup on his Sanger jet boat so he's offering me the current Demon 850 carb with Edelbrock victor intake to try for free. Is there anything to gain replacing the stock carb? How about swapping the victor for the Weiand Team G (stock intake)? I'm thinking the carb will help, but not the intake. If the carb will help, what jetting should I look into?

I think an 850 for that engine is too big. I would think you will have less throttle response, it will idle worse and will offer little or know benifit especially if you have stock exhaust. Just my $.02

My 96 454 Mag has a Demon 825 and a Edelbrock Victor Jr. Intake among other things and runs great. I also have powerflow exhaust.

It was upgraded prior to my ownership.

If your engine is stock, an 850 is most likely going to be too large for you, and cause performance issues.

Thanks for the inputs. The engine is stock right now except for the unknown "one step hotter cam" that the rebuilders used when the previous owner had a re-man longblock installed.

I plan to install exhaust next spring when I get away from salt water. Either CMI or Dana marine manifolds. Maybe then the intake/carb will work better?

The 850 is going to be too large for you. A 750 will give you better performance on a combination like this.

If you build up your engine to make 500+HP at 5600+rpm, the 850 would be the right carb.
Like the others have said, 750 is the right carb for a stock 454mag.

I have read somewhere in the book by Dennis Moore on BIG BLOCK CHEVY PERFORMANCE, that the intake manifold (dual plane) is the best invention since slice bread. Anything else for a stock application would be foolish. Also mention anything over a 750 cfm for stock 454 is just over kill. Will most likely lose performance.

I have to say that it might work...swapped 750 SeaDemon to 850 Demon on friends boat 454, lost nothing in lower end, and after 4000rpm it really started to fly. No difference in top speed, however...
So, I would try, if dont have to use cash, just another set of intake gaskets and some time. Hot rodding at it`s best...
