What would you set timing at ?

I`m about to fire up new engine. I have complete MSD ignition. My previous engine had 8.5 to 1 pistons. I set base timing at 10* and used a 25* bushing for a total timing of 35*. This was with light springs, full advance all by 2500 rpm. It ran great with these specs.
My new engine has 10.1 to 1 pistons, iron heads and a roller cam with 110 LSA. I am figuring on leaving the advance rate springs as they are ( in by 2500 rpm ). I would like to set base timing at 12* and run a 18* bushing, for total timing of 30*. Would this be safe with pump gas? What octane can I get by with?

A bigger cam will idle better with more initial timing. About 16-18 works well. However you are limited by available bushings and total advance. Use the black bushing, medium springs to have it all in by 3000 and set the total where you want it.
