Full Hyd vs Mechanical0-Hyd steering Pros & Cons

Can some one explain the pros and cons of full hydraulic steering system versus a mechanical steering system with power assist that has been converted to a single ram external steering?

This would be for a Mercruiser 496HO Bravo 1 single drive.

Thanks!

Rage the add on system using the cable helm will still allow some well play, the full hyd setup will be tight. The helm and hoses will not cost that more. Go with the full system

One more question - On a single engine - when do you need two cylinders versus a single cylinder?

The helm pump is not to bad $ wise if you are willing to use the stock steel streeing post. Then you will need hyd hoses of course Check with trick or IMCO or these suppliers on this site. Make sure you buy the steering post with the 3/4'' shaft.
I would think a single cylinder is good with a single motor

Re: Full Hyd vs Mechanical0-Hyd steering Pros & Cons

Can someone direct me to a schematic layout of a full hydraulic steering system. I am having trouble understanding where all the 'pumps' are located and how many there are etc.

What is the deal with different size steering wheel posts/shafts. What other upgrades changes are required when converting from power assisted mechanical steering to full hydraulic beyond the 'kit'.

You guys are right, there does not seem to be that much difference in price between the full hyd kit and the upgrade to external steering kit. Am I missing anything?

Thanks!
