Crane HI-6M knock sensor

Looking at switching from a MSD ignition to a Crane HI-6M. Has anyone used the knock sensor option with the Crane box? Which sensor did you use and where was it mounted? Gen IV, Gen V, GenVI Block?

Re: Crane HI-6M knock sensor

Have another question. Currently using T-Bolt IV with MSD 6M and V6-14 module. Running 30 degrees total on 454 with B&M 250's and 741 cam. I get a 300 rpm drop from out of gear to in gear. Will going to a fixed 30 degrees timing help this out? I cuurently idle at 950 out and 650 in. What are others seeing as for RPM in-out of gear drop?

What cam are you using? If it is large enough to bleed off some cylinder pressure below 3000 rpm, try it. I would be careful about detonation under acceleration. My rpm drop is about the same but I try to keep my idle below 900 rpm to save the drives. I have to throttle each time I shift to keep the rpm's up.

Cam is Crane 741 hyd roller. The total 30 degrees is in by 1700 rpm with the V6-14 module. The timing starts to advance around 800rpm with the V6 module.

I purchased the same crane boxes - Cranes support and automatic retard boxes advertized can not be found and crane is no help. I have used the boxes for 2 years - paid the money ran them on a dyno to prove knock window/ tested fuels etc - 509's w/ 250 blower 5 lbs boost - 653 hp @ 5300 rpm

If you go with lock in timiing you should be able to lower you idle out of gear & still have the same idle in gear. With the load of the prop & your timing retarding is the reason you are having to go to such a high idle rpm.

Yes, with a cam that large, I'd lock the timing. It should improve your idle.I had a problem with starters though after I locked mine. On my 540's the small gear drive starters would break if the engines kicked back. Went through 8 starters summer before last. This summer I installed Tilton starters and MSD start retard boxes that retard up to 20 degrees only at startup. No problems this year at all.

With the Crane box locked at 30 degrees timing will I still be able to use the knock sensor input and which knock sensor is compatible?
