Tab Questions

I have a 25' Checkmate with Bennnet tabs which measure 12"W and 11"L When using these things, they are very touchy. Meaning it takes forever for a noticeable difference to change the boats attitude. When it finally does, it changes quickly. I was wondering if it is the size of them (length), or maybe the location. They are 1" up from the bottom of the hull. Is that too far up, or are they too short?

This is fairly typical with that type-or for that matter any type of tab. It is shrouded behind the hull when up and has no real effect. As you push down on them they eventually unshroud and start to push on the water. Then the pressure on the surface begins to increase FAST and the tab really starts to have an effect. Bigger tabs would simply be more touchy once they worked, smaller might not do the job without a lot of deflection, which will hurt speed and performance.

Your tabs seem to be mounted pretty far out towards the side of the boat. It seems like they would take longer to react at speed. Also, they are partially covering part of your chines. I don't know if that has any effect on what you mentioned.

Mine are mounted closer to the drive and parallel with the bottom.
