454 stroker qeustions

i have been lookin into some stroker kits for the 454 motors. i like the world balanced rotating assemblies. i want to do a 496 kit. i also have been reading about the flatlander kits. 1 of my biggest questions is can i buy a kit from summit or do i need marine parts? also what other parts do i need to change to stroke my motor oil pan, pump, fuel pump ect... i already have a set of merlin ported ovals right now. thanks

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

I built one this year and love it. :D Had no problems at all. My machine shop did all the balancing. Had to turn the crank to get the correct clearence. They also notched the block. Fuel pump has nothing to do with the rotating assembly. I used the original oil pan with no problems.

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

what parts did you buy? how big did you go. i would like to buy the whole ass. with a new forged crank. that def. makes me want to look into it more if you have had such good luck with it.

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

I just finished my 496 a few months ago and now have about 20hrs on it and I LOVE it!!!! Very little clearancing on the block needed and I used my stock merc oil pan also. Believe it or not I am even using the stock sea pump driven mechanical fuel pump with only a couple of mods made to it. There are many experienced builders on this forum that will come to your rescue if you give them a day or two. I used Competition Products in Oshkosh WI for nearly all of my parts. Erik was very knowledgeable, courteous, and most of all patient with my endless questions every time I spoke with him. Continue the 496 build, you will not be sorry!!!!!!!

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

I just built a pair of Gen IV strokers this year for my Fountain. I couldn't be happier. These things make great power and have some of the best normally aspirated mid range I've ever felt.

We used the Eagle rotating assemblies with forged cranks(around $2400?) and J&E 10.4:1 pistons. They run just fine on pump gas but I've been running a blend. With the cost of pump gas in CA it's a push. I used the Merlin Dart raised exhaust port heads and they really do flow nice. Peak torque comes in at about 3100 and rolls off nice and smooth.

The strokers have a nice deep sound to them like nothing else.

What Gen are your blocks? It will make a difference on how much you spend on machining. Gen IVs' require little for a stroker kit.

my motors are mark IV blocks and i plan on going to a 496. how big did you go to?

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

496. Go with the Eagle rotating assemblies. I would suggest you get everything balanced. Eagle's not all that "On" with the balancing. The Gen IV blocks are a great canidate for the stroker kit. You'll be happy with it for sure. Good luck and let me know if you want mnore 411 on what I did to mine.

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

I also purchased my kit from Competition Products. They have many compression ratio's available. Don't skimp $$ go with forged pistons. Remember the 496 is bored .060. You only want bore .030 if you can. This will still give you 489 Cubes. If something goes wrong, hopefully you still can bore the block one more time out to .060. I had 10 hours on my non stroked engine this spring that was already bored .030. Crank was toast and I had room to bore out to .060, that how I ended up with a 496 stroker, the hard way $$$$

Anybody want to break down the costs for us?

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

Prices will be middle of the ground:
Parts
Scat 4340 Crank $799
Scat 4340 I Beam rod $359 or Scat H Beam Rod $479
Probe Piston Ring Kit $699
Clevite H Bearings Rods and Mains $140

Labor
Balance Assembly $200
Clearance Block $150

This kit would support 700HP

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

i am def. going to use forged pistons and crank. and i want to stay around the 9:5:1 ratio on the comp. i really would like to buy everything from one place as a kit or something and then just bring my block to my machine shop and have it done. the world stroker parts say there already balenced. is that just a bore and bolt in kit?

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

You may want to consider using a 502 block, since you're replacing all the internal parts anyway. The bigger bore pistons cost about the same, and you'll have a 540/547/555 when you're done. The 502 block is a lot stronger, and has blind head bolt holes, among other advantages. I found mine at a machine shop for $750, machined and ready to assemble. A lot of extra torque and hp for a little money. Just a thought.

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

good point, but i would rather just do my block and if something ever happens then i will be forced to get a 502+

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

I built a 489" (.030 over bore) using a Gen VI block. I shopped the internet for best deals.

I used:
Scat forged crank $600
Eagle H-beam rods (6.135" length) $350
SRP forged pistons (10 to 1 comp.) $525

No block clearancing was needed, but I did zero-deck the block, among other things. I`m running rectangle-port Merlins and a .612" roller cam.
It runs good, plenty fast in a 22' Baja.

what does block clearancing mean and what does ''zero-deck'' mean also?

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

Gen 4 blocks may require grinding in the pan rail area so the rods have clearance while in rotation. Depending on rod design and the block this can be minimal to a mild grinding job.

Zero decking is bringing cutting the block deck surface down till the piston face is equal to it or "Zero" deck. This enhances the flame travel and compression by optimizing the quench area.

My local machine shop did 100% of my machine work, but high performance engines are his area of expertise.
"Zero Decking" a block is not a requirement.

Chris, Another newbie question......

In a stock engine, how far below the deck are the pistons? I expect it varies from one engine to another. Just wondering.

Re: 454 stroker qeustions

Kid,
It will vary but .010" is about the average.

Thanks Chris. Wow....wouldn't think .010 would make much diff. Not doubting you....just think'n out loud.

i know Competition Products was spoke of earlier in the thread but who else makes a good 496 pakage? my engine is coming out this weekend and i want to get the ball rollin early so i have all winter to wait fo parts.
