new motor still no speed
I just cant get to 60 mph.
i have an old heavy baja 1986 25 weight is approx 5500 lbs. 454 mag trs/ engine should have 450 470 hp. aluminum heads edelbrock oval, stainless exhaust rpm intake roller rockers, cam .544 .547 226 236 112 cl . I spin a bravo 1 22 pitch 5100 rpm trim way high for 56 on gps. the bottom of the boat does have a built in hook on it. the hook almost seems like it has a ripple in it. normal or a problem? I have put so much time and money in this and all I want is more speed. I know the hull is a poor design but there has to be a reasonable answer. spending $30000 is just not going to happen, now with the cost of everything else and the short summers here in Mi. |
Re: new motor still no speed
You have a little over 20% slip. It sounds like you are going to need some prop work. Did you dyno the engine?

Re: new motor still no speed
no i have not dyno'd the engine but it is built right and jetted right
tried different props planes fast and mid is awesome |

Re: new motor still no speed
Try a different prop. I too have a trs drive and tried a bravo I prop. The slippage was way too high. Over 20% like yours. I found that the cleaver style works best for me.

Re: new motor still no speed
I'd try a 23p mirage + 3 blade or revolution 4 on that trs drive, a bravo has a lot of dia for a deep drive.
The built in hook will slow the boat down too. I had a friend with a 24' Formula that he had the hook removed from and it helped a lot. Then he had to add bigger trim tabs though... |
Re: new motor still no speed
i did run a 23 mirage plus @ 54 mph @ 4500 rpm
But the prop was a (baja) manufacture prop that was labed for a different boat. |
Re: new motor still no speed
Why Don't You Try A Hydromotive Prop They Work Great On Baja's.

If it accelerates hard then poops out the cam may be too short. Also no port work on the heads may be a problem too. There not the best for out of the box performance. |
Re: new motor still no speed
Ok,do you think that the hooks on the bottom will help.
how much do you think the head work will help? a cam is a lot of work on that boat. let me just tell this horrible story of this boat. stock 330 trs got 49 gps then i cooked it now head work major port Polish and valve job mill the heads excett, new pistons large dome edelbrock performer intake and cam. 58 mph gps spun a brg to high compression. next motor rework crank block deck block new pistons .103 dome valve job bigger cam ok, 52 gps 30 hours and snapped a rod next motor bigger cam comp cam new holly 800 carb jetted down for best speed valve job rework crank etcetera. 53 gps then the stringers ar rotten rip the entire boat to pieces and put back together never again!!! while the motors out I want more speed so next motor new heads edelbrock rpm heads rpm intake bigger cam .540 226 comp roller rockers new stainless marine exhaust high compression premium fuel only now, 54 gps 25 hours latter boat finally back motor spins a bearing. now i am done next motor new block 454 mag ,valve job new hipo trans fuel pump and try lots of props max 54- 3 blade 56 4 blade gps. so I don't really want to go through a lot more work to see nothing in return. can I be sure it would help. |
