Years and 'gens' on GM motors?

Can anyone give me the reader's digest version of what "Gen" motors were produced in what years? I get confuzzled sometimes....

I'm really just wondering what "Gen" my 1996 454's are... so I can be accurate when dreaming about the parts I'm gonna buy for them! :D

Grrr, looks like mine could be either Gen V *or* Gen VI, depending on the block numbers. Which are in the boat. On a rack. Inaccessible. Until April....

Look at your timing covers, if it's Gen VI it will have a pointer with the numbers on the balancer.

Gen V will have the timing numbers on the timing cover.

Since you cant see yours.....Biggest external difference is Gen 5 have steel chain cover, 6 has alloy. Both have remote fuel pumps. (not block mounted) More then likely yours are 5. Either way except for cam and lifters most external parts interchange. What do you plan to do? It may not make a difference.
