502/540

Please help, I'm looking to upgrade my 502 gen 5 to a 540 and have a few questions. What kind of HP/torque should I get and at what RPMs. This is what I'm looking at: Edelbrock Marine Alum Heads, GM Performancs Duel plane intake, 850 Demon, Eagle 4340 crank 4.250, Eagle 4340 3D Rods 6.385, SRP Pistons 10 to 1 ?, Cam ? I want to run pump gas 93? Any and all help is appreciated. :D

I just dyno'd my gen 6:

540 , 10:1, aluminum GMPP heads, dual plane, demon 850, crane hydraulic roller with about 600 lift. I can look up the cam part number if interested. The general consensus has been that my heads suck. Attached is the dyno pull (on 93 octane)

Re: 502/540

Skip the dual plane intake and plan on more carb.

CMC the dual plane on yours is part of your problem but not all. Something is definately weird. Your peak tq is way too early. Without head and cam specs its hard to say, but .600 lift should be ok. What are you running for exhaust? That is critical as well. Your bsfc seems a little low too, do you have A/F ratio info?

aren't alot of guys running AFR or Merlin heads on their 540s?

Re: 502/540

Use rectangular port heads. If Edelbrock has a 119cc chamber option, they would give you 9.7 to 1 compression with flat top pistons. The 110cc would push compression over 10 to 1. Use a single plane intake, Merlin or Dart are good. I'm using a Holley 1050 on mine, model 8082-1. It's very close out of the box. It's an auto carb but the j tubes are easy to press in.

Re: 502/540

Thanks a lot for the info and keep it coming.
So far it sounds like, Edelbrock Marine Alum Heads 315 CC IN 300 CC EX runners 118 cc chambers, roller rockers, 741 cam, single plane intake Merlin or Dart, 1050 carb, SRP pistons 10.4 to 1 with 0 deck and 118 cc chambers, Eagle 4340 crank and rods, 10qt oil pan.
50boat : can you send me some info? dyno, cam, heads and so on. Most of what I have found is 600 to 650 hp. :drink:

Re: 502/540

800: The heads are oval port, 110cc chamber GMPP heads. I haven't been able to find any more info on them. I have lightning headers and a/f was at 12.5. I'm planning on switching out the heads and intake this winter or maybe vortechs!?!

Re: 502/540

The build for my engines looked like this.
540 CID - Dart Big M tall deck blocks, JE Pistons, Carillo rods, Eagle 4340 cranks, 9.75 to 1 CR, internally balanced, Dart single plane intake, GM Perf heads (some port work), Crane gold rockers, hydraulic roller lifters, Crane 139661 cam, 1050 dominator, MSD distributor coil and 7AL box, 11 quart oil pan, CMI headers. Idles at 600 in gear.

No dyno sheets - but builder has built several and believes around 675 HP at 5200 - 5400. Rev limiters set to 6K.

These attach to SSM #3 through BW 72c trans.

Very reliable, low maintenance, 2 seasons so far.

Good luck,
Doug

This is an 8.8 to 1 Canfield headed engine. Single 850 Blue carb with HP500/Dart intakes with 33 degrees of timing with 93 octane:

RPM TQ HP
3000 601.5 343.6
3400 601.8 389.6
3800 624.8 452.1
4200 628.5 502.6
4600 630.8 552.4*
5000 626.5 596.5
5400 602.9 619.9
5800 559.6 618.

Engine had a peak torque of 630# from 4500 to 4800.
