Digital Tach or not

I am looking to adjust rpm, trim and trim tab settings for the most economical cruising. I have a flo scan already installed. Would it be a help to go to a digital tach to get closer settings and will a LED digital tach be readable in bright sunlight? My original tach is not reading accuratly and needs to be replaced. Most of my running is just above planing speed at around 3000+ rpm. Thanks for any replies.

Re: Digital Tach or not

Crazy,
I switched to a digital tach years ago... they are accurate to 1rpm.. seeing that they read a the pulse from the distributer and dont have to convert it to analog. My tach is LCD not LED and easy to read in bright sunlight. It is back lit for nite use.
After installing it, I was seeing a wide variation in rpm at WOT.. turns out I was hitting my rev limiter and could see it happen on the tach. Just didnt know that was what was happening..
So Yes.. switch, the analog tachs are all over the place. I tried to calibrate some and the readings are off at different rpms, none the same.. Go digital and you will never go back!!

Hope this helps
Dick

I think somone makes a tach with an analog pointer and a digital readout below it. I run twins and prefer the analog because I can compare at a glance. Yes digital is more accurate but when the pointers on my analogs say the same I can fine tune by ear to match RPM's.

What engines do you have? Smartcraft might be the way to go if you have a 496 or 525. It will tell you a lot more than just accurate RPMs.

I'm looking for gages that have the pointers stacked on top of each other. For example, one tachometer head would have two needles. We are rigging a boat that has limited dash space, for the number of gages to be installed.
