Flushing out a drive ?

Is there something that can be flushed through an outdrive to clean it out when changing oil if the old oil was contaminated. Also what is the proceedure ?

Re: Flushing out a drive ?

question would be: what was the contaminate?
If water the it usually settles to the bottom of the drive.....i had that once with my TRS.....let it sit for about 2 days and the water will sepperate to the bottom...just drain it completely and refill with new oil. Make sure to fix the problem of course. If you have a contaminated drive from a broken gear set....like the uppers or lower went out and there stuff all over the place....then it need to be torn all down cause you will nenver get it all clean with any flushing....

Wally, the oil was contaminated with water. ( see my earlier post about what Redline drive oil should look like.) It never seperated. If it does not pass a pressure test and is repaired can it be flushed before it's refilled ?

On the Drive fluid thread there was a Amsoil engineer posting and he said that if you leave any of the cleaner in it ,it will contaminate the oil. Thus making it foam, So be careful.

Re: Flushing out a drive ?

i had redline oil in my TRS drive and had water contaminate it from a loose plug.......i let the drive drain for 2 days just to be sure.....i even pumped some clean oil in it from the top to help try and push the rest out.........refilled and never had a problem again....so it cant be all that bad. :)

Re: Flushing out a drive ?

Also the Amsoil engineer told the there new Marine amsoil oil would take up to 10% contamination without loosing its lubbing capabilty.

If ya got water probs?

Re: Flushing out a drive ?

Thank you all ! I am going to try and find the time this weekend to pressure test the drive. Have any of you vacuum tested a drive ? What's the proceedure ?

Re: Flushing out a drive ?

screw a gauge into the top oil port, fill plug and pull a vacumm on it.. let it set for a day or two, see if it changes. I also put 10psi to the drive for a few days and see if it stays, then your good.. Unless you heat the drive up and push the drive oil out the prop seals..

Hope that helps
Dick
