oil pump selection
 

Does anyone have the part number for a engine oil pump used in a 89 mercruiser 454? With the passing of katrina all my usual boat part stores are gone. Is there a cross over pump I could get at the local auto part store. One more thing, do I have to re-use the pickup from old one? It is welded on from fact.

For the big block application (and I think...I said think) They are the same for like 1968-1999, here is the listing for the high volume normal pressure pump, screen, and drive.

Depending on the capicity of the pan (7 quart?) Should be Melling Pump #M-77HV, Screen Melling #241S and Melling oil pump drive #IS77.

You will need to have the new screen welded to the pump. You should also be able to cross these numbers with other manufactures at your local parts store.

Thanks, I will look into this and I will have to look and see what a stock 454 oil pan cap. is. Do you know right off hand? Thought that I might get a pump from mercury but it was unclear if it came with pickup. Plus I'm sure you are going to pay more.

I think the Mercury does come with a pickup. I would go with an after market pump like the Melling and have someone weld the screen on for you. Be sure to see if those numbers will work with your application. Any "good" parts store will sell Melling and have access to a cataloge with pictures.

Part #10770 (M77HV) HI VOLUME PUMP-25% ADD’L VOL OF OIL THAN STOCK PUMP. INCLUDES I/S SHAFT W/STEEL GUIDE, USES STOCK 3/4” PRESS-IN SCREEN.

*Note: The mesh of the screen should be 3/8” to 1/2” above the oil pan.

The one from merc does come with the pickup but big $$$. If you have the sheet metal pan its 8 quarts. The cast aluminum one is closer to 6. You can use a dremel with a cutoff wheel to remove the weld from the existing pickup and reuse it but not recommended. Especially if from an engine failure.

Thanks for the information. I purchased 2 complete 454 take outs that were running fine. I guess the way to go on this would be to cut the pickups off the old pumps and install them on the new pumps. Heat will not damage the pump? Has anyone epoxied them in?

Weld or Braize. Just a good spot so it wont fall off, you dont have to go all the way around. I always remove the pressure relief spring as it can get weak from the heat.

The screens are less then $10 each....I'd replace them if it were me. By the time you cut them off, clean them and re-weld them....Is it really worth it?

Great to hear from ya'll and that sounds perfect to me. We live in Tylertown Ms but keep our boat at the warsaw. Boat name "FARFROMPUKEN". My wife has been to the shop in slidell before. Have met one of ya'll at sun buns. I belive he was in construction.
Hope no one was hurt during storm. Still have the "cyclone" ? Last time I spoke to one of ya'll you were talking of building something in the 175-200 mph range.
I will call ya'll monday and hopefully I can get two complete pumps. I will have to get directions to pick up. Just love it when a plan comes together. This web site is a great place.
