Installed Sterndrive: Now confused!

I just replaced my steering gimble (1998 Bravo 1, 454carb) and re-installed the sterndrive. Now, when I put the gear shift in forward (motor not running), the prop shaft will turn each direction freely... I'm thinking it shouldn't turn because it's in gear.... I was careful about lining up the gear shift cable...

When I put the gear shift in reverse, the prop shaft will turn only one direction.

Maybe the motor has to be running for the foward gear to engage (boat in garage, can't start it). Does anyone know more about this?

Thanks!!!!!

It should turn freely one direction when in gear, freely opposite direction when in other gear. Are you sure it is adjusted right? Doesn't take much of out-of-adjustment for it not to engage. Try putting in gear at teh motor with the cable to shifter unhooked.

Naturally, don't force with motor not running.

Thanks for the help! You're right, if I push the shift cable at the motor it engages. I ordered the cable adjustment tool ($7.00) so I can get the slop out of it.

Solved. Thanks a ton!!!!
