150 ci ... 720 hp
was just reading where the new F1 motors are about 150 ci (2.4l) v-8 and the first generation ones are making 720 hp on 101 octane fuel..... normally aspirated.... and they only weigh about 200lbs i think..... so 4 of those for every 502....
wow... that would get you across the water... |
Re: 150 ci ... 720 hp
the only problem is that with only about 250 lbft of torque, you'd want to hit the water at top speed, and don't stop (kinda like the snowmobiles)!

Re: 150 ci ... 720 hp
at what... about 19,500 revs this year ? geeze... remember when 500 cc 2 cycle bikes couldn't do that ? imagine putting that technology and materials in a 500 inch v8....
would make 700 hp at idle...which would be about 8000 rpm... have to have some VERY good transmissions and drives... and would be well w/ in everyone's budget at about 2.5 mil each oh well back to my iron v-8's happy new year everybody |

Re: 150 ci ... 720 hp
Is it a 2 cycle ? If it is it's like having 300ci from the get go. when you compare it against a 4cycle motor. If I could figure out a way to get water from the bottom of the boat through a strainer on the boat bottom and then through a strainer in the boat I'd be real interested in outboards. Out here on the south shore of Long Island , we have a huge seaweed problem,(maybe because of everyone fertilizing their lawns) also more shallow water than deep water in the bay. I think the deepest it gets is about 12 ft. Anyone have any ideas ? Also you won't suck up a plastic bag on a wedge strainer like you will with it wrapped around the lower unit. And the outboard get's its water from the bottom of the lower, the first thing to hit bottom. With the wedge strainer even if i hit bottom, I'm still getting good water, instead of sand and muck. Alot of us have boat slips and canals that are shallow and the officials won't dredge, something to do with Epa, Army corp. of engineers, etc... mostly $$$. So we are forced to drive our boats through crap. BBB :(

Re: 150 ci ... 720 hp
most believe they will be over 800 by mid season, the goal was to reduce the prevouis output by roughly 20% as they were pushing (and some teams exceeding) 1000 HP with the 3.0 v-10's.... other rules that might end up being a bigger deal are new wing rules (raise the front wing and move the rear wing forward, smaller diffusers under the car), new tire rules and qualifying rules might play a larger role.... also, there is still debate on how the old 3.0 v-10's can be used, almost all agree with the current restrictor, the v-10 will have an advantage..(not all teams have developed their v-8's yet...) should be interesting with one tire manufacture again.... prepare for the return of ferrari.... :D :drink:

Re: 150 ci ... 720 hp
Well guys. I was forced at gunpoint to install a 159 cid Offenhauser into a customers boat. The engine had made 1000 HP at Indy at 10,500 rpm back in the 1970's I think. We had it detuned and converted to gasoline and turbocharged with a water wrapper around the turbo. It was a disaster. We had a mechanical engineer involved who could read a 300 page EFI manual without it putting him to sleep. As I privately predicted, the boat would not plane off. We then used a 3 speed turbo 400 transmission to let it rev up through the gears. Even then with 6 different prop tests it would barely stay on plane. We shifted gears at 8500 rpm. At that speed you wanted a steel shell over your genitalia. The waste gate ran red hot and we were afraid it would catch the boat on fire.

a pair of 2.4 800 HP outboards would be fun on a mid-size cat..... :D :drink:
