value of a B&M blower

What is the value of a B&M blower with 50 hours on it? I'm am looking at a boat that has a 510ci engine with a blower and I want reliability more than top end. I was thinking maybe i could remove the blower, sell it, and put that money back into the boat in other forms. Thanks

Re: value of a B&M blower

I sold a 250 with intake, 1050 carb, V6 module, wire harness, crossover, all hoses and belts for a bolt on conversion for $2000 3 yrs ago. Was the going rate for just the blower/intake and carb then.

Thanks US1. I'm going to look at the boat on sunday. If I end up buying it, i'm either taking the blower off or turning down the boost. I want as much reliability as possible.

Re: value of a B&M blower

I told the original owner of the boat I didn't want a blower because of reliabilty issues. He suggested that I remove it before I ever put it on the water. I should've listen. :D
World of difference with and w/o the blower just in your normal driving. Getting on plain was the difference between 1/4 throttle with, and 3/4 w/o.

Re: value of a B&M blower

29,
I received the blower from US1 and installed it on my boat. There is no going back. Do not water test the boat if you are entertaining the idea of removing it! I would question 50 hours on a B&M since they have not been made as such for some time. If you go with the blower motor and prep the engine properly and use with some sanity you will be happy.

I would suggest having Nickerson prep the carb. You will need to know all the details on internals. Proper A/F will help the motor live.
Control oil temp
Control water temp
Use the proper exhaust valves
Easy on the drive
Service the blower every 250 hours, have The Blower Shop do the upgrades.
Be prepared to replace lifters and rockers and springs every 250, this is dependent upon your cam to a degree
Change oils every 25, drive and engine
Hang on to your as* when you get insurance
Keep boost at 5 or under
Drive it sanely

I have no regrets with the blower motor. My 502 had about 400 hours on it before adding blower. Currently at 700 hours. I tore it down to do the lifters, rockers, springs etc. and everything looks fine. Maintenance is the key. If you can live with the maintenance you should be OK. Fuel is not too bad. I was turning a 23 pitch and now turn a 27. Old cruise speed required much higher RPM than with the blower. You can loaf the engine at 3000 and keep up with similar boats turning 3600. At 3K the engine does not really see any boost.

It all depends upon your tolerance for service. I may remove the blower some day as I am getting a little tired of the maintenance but the speed is not out of my system yet. Possible plan is to get a cruiser and keep the Baja around for the fast days on the water. Cruiser for lazy weekends or week long trips. Maybe I need a pontoon!
