merc 2.4
 

am looking at a boat with twin 2.4 merc outboards i am not sure of the hp rating. what years and hp were these manufactured? thanks

these were produced from the late eighties till early nineties, and produced about 24o h.p.built 2 ways e.f.i and carb. carb usually the earliewr model's. they are known to be hand grenades for the most part. however if you can find a good pair,that run, the sound completely BADASS. they howl incredibly especially at 7000 +++. but finding a pair that hasnt popped is not easy. they are capable of almost 300 h.p with heavy mod's, atleast the later e.f.i ones are.

thanks. i thought they only put out around 150? or is that a different engine i am thinking of

2.4 is the displacement of the engine. they started at 150 v-6 and went up to the 2.4 mod vp, or later the 2.4 off shore. again rated at 240 h.p @7200-7400 rpm.

The Mod vp,s were the real good ones. They had
a one piece cover with rubber ties. 275hp all day.
they were displaced as Monstaa said.
The 200 2.4 are a dime a dozen and when setup right
ran really good they had chrome cylinder walls.
You had to bore and sleeve to repair.
Most 200,s and 150,s came with the Clam shell cover

Most of the issuies was the power pack ignitions
on each side. Always keep a spair.

I owned and ran a 27 Signature with three of them
I got to know them very well :D

A compresion test will tell you alot.
aswell as the idle in the water.
Caution on the hose they will sound great
always test them in the water.
