Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

2 Attachment(s)
I just recently purchased a pair of Arneson #6 drives to couple to a pair of rebuilt 557's / 660 hp, 720 ft lb (6000 rpm) in a 31' Offshore V hull with no steps. I need help with what props to run and I wanted to hear about other setups with arnesons and your opinions of them. :D :D :D

I ran a asd 6 in a twin turbo diesel checkmate & used a 18x29 4 blade.kinda unique but I had toooooo many times get the actuators resealed. Also props cost to much so do your math and get it right the first time.

Well, mine aren't Arnies, but the info my help. 302 Formula, warmed over 468's with Kaama drives. I run a 16.5x26 prop. Top speed is 78.6. This is a heavy boat.

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

Doug, Yes they are the Bravo to Arneson conversion. I've been talking to Rik at Arneson and I feel pretty comfortable, I just want to see what other boats are running for props, cause there some damn expensive. With the Bravos I had four sets of props.

CUDA - I'm suprised to see you here, I'm usually LMAO in UC at you guys, Thankyou for the information. Whats that 302 weigh in at ? Did you have to lower your motors?

Drgnrydr, what are the actuators? what year were those drives?

Caveman is that your Sutphen for sale with arnesons? if so, what does it run?

I won't receive these drives for another couple of weeks

Mine came from the factory with the surface drives. If you look real hard at the transom, you can barely make out where it must have had holes for a different exhaust. I think they were actually higher than the one's it has now.

Caveman I want a dinasour 117 !!! I'm frickin blown away. Sorry, I've got a bad memory, wrong boat
I have a lot of questions for you.
Did your Hustler come with that setup?
Whats that boat weigh?
What props?
HP?
How does it handle?

Caveman I need your help, cause I wanna go that fast :evilb: :evilb:

Cuda when I talked to Rik at Arneson he said I may have to lower my motors, my little brain did'nt think that I would have to lower my exhausts as well.

Does anyone have extra props laying around for the arnesons??

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

Are there any boat manufacturers that install Arneson surface drives as standard equipment ?

Caveman I think your drives are closer together than what mine will be. ??
So what boat are you going to buy, if you sell yours?
Have you had any problems with those drives or steering combo setup?
How long have you owned that boat

I don't think my hull is near as effecient as others. With 500 hp per side on bravo ones 1.5 gear ratio with 24 Hydros we could only get 78

So with that info were will we be? New hp 660

??? 117 - 78 = alot more money

The boat dosn't belong to me.It's a customer of mine.We installed the Arneson Drive's drives last spring.
Every engine oil change we had to do something to the drives also,at that time the motors were 750hp.My customer decided to add the drives for more reliability and at that point added intercoolers. We did the Poker Run Miami to KW in november beat on them no problem. You may be supprised what these will do for your boat they handle well,if I were setting up a Big HP boat this would be the way I would go.

Are there any calculations that I could run to determine which props I'll need? We tried to do that last year when we went from 454s to 502s. I was told we would go up 3 prop sizes, we ended up back with the same props after all the testing.

Caveman - Congratulations, whats your next one gonna be?
Did you let the prop shaft adapters go with the boat? If not, I'll buy them. I take a pair or two of your props but I don't know were I'm going to be yet.

32storm- Whats your boat have in it?

Fishead - I may be interested, what are you looking to get out of those?

Doug - So every oil change you had to repair something on the drives? Tell me more

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

Been lurking a while - finally posting - Hello All!

yup - I have ASD8 on my beast of a boat...it is a Harley 42 and weighs in the 16-18k lbs range - twin 502 carbs with about 425hp. Motors are 4-plus feet forward of the transom and fuel and water forward of that.

I am still screwing around with prop testing since my repower a year ago. Props are hard to find and very spendy....rediculous. Current props are old 3 blade rolla props with 17-inch diameter and 18 inch pitch and heavy cup - little or no rake. I get 40 mph at 4000 rpm but cant get to my WOT range of 5000 rpm - best I get is 4200.

I could use a pair of cleavered 4-5-6 blade 16x20 - 19tooth but I dont think they exist - budget is really tight - 2 in college.

Ideally - a local shop with a bunch I can test to find the best setup would be awesom....anyone know of one in Fort Lauderdale area?

Cheers

Swamplizard13 05-25-2006 09:17 AM

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

or less pitch - not sure yet.

BTW - for those of you have have not used surface drives - it is an all-or-nothing proposition - I think Cuda said it best - 8mph or 80mph - nothing in between. so if your goal is to run in rough seas at speeds that don't beat you to death ... there is no middle ground and these drives may not be what you want.

Rik 05-25-2006 11:27 AM

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

You should have no problem with the boat though your speed range if you have the correct propeller and reducton ratio.

Swamplizard13 05-25-2006 03:10 PM

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

Hey Rik how are ya? - no negatives meant in the above comment - I just find that my boat will not do 18mph if I want it to due to bad seas ... it's fast or slow. Probably a function of wrong props and too heavy a boat ... since I've tried with drives and tabs down - there is no slow cruise.

cuda 05-25-2006 03:56 PM

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

Actually, it will run about 10 mph, and then isn't happy until at least 36. It will stay on a plane at a lower speed, if you want to fool with it. If you try to run faster than ten without getting on a plane, it will just cavitate, which is fine if you are getting up. It's like a slingshot effect. It will rev to about 4500 cavitating, then you'll feel it grab, and come up. Maybe a Bravo will plane faster, I don't know, but at 100 yards, I'll guarantee I'll be ahead of the Bravo boat with similar weight and power.

All and all, I really love the surface drives. You hear people say they don't handle well at low speed, which is way overblown. They handle fine going forward, now backing up is a bit problematic, besides, who buys a boat because of it's superior low speed handling? :)

I've had my boat over three years now, I changed one boot when I bought it, and other than that, I have done absolutely nothing to them other than change the oil.

I'm going to miss this boat if I sell. :(

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

For what you want, you need a differnet propeller size and reduction ratio.

Then you will be a happier boater.

Frequency 05-25-2006 08:34 PM

Re: Arneson Surface Drives/ Hull / HP / Speed ??

I think prop selection is critical. I have too much transom lift with five blade props on my Pulsedrive - hoping four blade props cure it. On the plus side, I can get on plane instantly. Low speed handling/reversing is excellent. Like Cuda, I can't just run up to 25 mph. I have to run up to 35 mph and then back down to 25. Try explaining THAT to your wife while tubing your 10 year old niece.
