New DCB, Bad Drive
 

Picked up my new to me 2001 34 DCB a week ago. In the process of purchase, had a survey. But they missed something. I sea trialed the boat and everything was running fine. Yesterday I thought I'd pull the props and change the drive lube. When I pulled the plug on the left rotating drive everything except a bearing popped out. The drives were supposedly Teagues, this particular drive was supposed to have a new upper. The power is now twin 575 NA, but the boat did have 1000 Hp blower motors for 100 hrs.
I'm over being ticked off about this.......well almost. I pulled the drive and split the upper and the lower, and pulled the top cap off. It appers that I was told the truth about the upper being new. I think this was the first time that the boat had been run with the new upper. Is it possible that someone threw on a new upper and did not clean shavings out of the lower? Anyway I don't want to be down this summer so I want to have someone go through the drive. Any recommendations in the Nashville, Lake Cumberland area? I knew going in that I would likely have drive issues due to history, I thought since the survey was fine it would be later. Erid

We have an excellent drive/engine/rigging/whatever mechanic here in NashVegas. His name (coincidentally) is Eric Betty. He has a shop @ 107 Spence Lane. Phone # is 615-714-2944. I highly recommend him. BTW, the DCB sounds like a nice ride. I have friend here that owns a 22' with twin 280s.

I'd say the lower was never cleaned out after the upper broke. Probably need to have it gone through to be sure all is up to snuff. Which DCB 34 did you end up buying? Those are really sweet looking boats. Look forward to seeing it this summer if you are down at Cumberland. I have 28 TD twin daytona with flames on the scoops, you can't miss it.

Did you notice much porpose when you did the test run, just curious.

The Mach 34 is the one that was on the cover of Hot Boat, white hull with orange and grey fades, the cover had the flames going on around it. The boat does porpoise if the tab is not adjusted. JD I will be at Cumberland as much as possible. Thanks, I will contact Dick and Eric. How would you ship a stern drive? I wonder if all the debris killed the new upper. I found lots of debris on the upper magnet. Did not note much if anything when I popped the top.

if you found metal on the upper magnet, then it probably found it's way into the new upper. Can you feel any chunks when you pinch the metal between your fingers? If so, then it is time to look at the entire drive. The tapered bearings are preloaded and dont like metal chunks!!
If you wanted to ship them.. a pallet and some plastic wrap works or you could get fancier.. Or split the upper and lower and box and UPS.. If I can be of any help.. give me a call. Evening 616-335-8446, before 9pm..

Yes I still have it, there have been lots of goodies added since you've seen it....Still looks great though... I'll give you first crack when I decide to make a change. :drink:
