The pulleys on the GM type alternators are interchangable, so just buy one and switch your pulley. If you have the mando now, they sell the pulleys also, just buy the one you need and swap. Takes a good glove to hold the fan still and an impact.

Ive got a mando alternator on my 97 502 motor. Part # is 817119-2. It actually had 5 wires hooked up to it. I labled all the wires so i could put it back together with out messing anything up. Is it worth it to go to a one wire set up? Where is the best place to find a replacement? Ive seen prices from $75-300 so not sure and only wanna do this once. You need to be a midget contorionist to get this thing on/off.

So am i better off going to the one wire set up? Will it bolt up just like the mando? All i would do is hook up the main wire and the ground? Looks like i would need to put a larger wire for the main? Still confused why i had 5 wires from it? One was a push wire that went to the stud that shows its not used.

I used the "Delco Style, Fits Mercruiser & OMC" shown above. It is a direct wire-for wire bolt in replacement for the Mando on my 7.4 (ie, the "Late Mando Style" above). If you get one that has a higher amp rating, yeas you will need to increase the main wire AND the ground. Don't rely on the case & bolts to ground it, increase the ground wire also. I had an old ground wire break and it fried the alt.

Ordered the replacement from db yesterday. Says it will be dilvered today

Forgot to mention when i pulled the old alternator off i found 3 of the case bolts missing. The case was pretty loose. That could be the whole problem but for $70 id rather just put a new one back on. After some searching i found 2 of the bolts in the bilge. Never did find the third.

What is the benefit of the Delco you swapped in over the Mando?
